A 1924 Hershey letter asks the press to expand local news and personals in Whats What and Whos Who. The editor replies that community cooperation helps fill the column and invites readers to report local conditions such as street problems crossings sewers and other nuisances, signing their names.
Dorothy Yost conceived the plot of William Russell's William Fox melodrama Whends Are Even shown at Hershey Central Theatre on Tuesday January 22. James Flood directed with authentic sets including a South Sea Island replica and sailing vessels to support unadulterated realism. Jack Arnold, a mining expert, leads a world round race for an opal mine against a rival company.
In a Hershey Dept Store fishing contest held last year, winners were announced this week in Lebanon Valley. Largest trout awarded to Hugh Wagner of Hershey with a $12 prize and six foot steel Bristol rod. Largest sucker to Wallace Gates of Hershey with a $2.50 steel rod. Largest catfish to Frank McCurdy of Campbelltown with a $1.75 American round willow reel.
Mrs Maud Seymour state evangelist and W C T U organizer led a meeting in Red Cross rooms to form a local branch. Present were Mrs R H Taylor, Mrs J E Snyder, Mrs Wm F R Murkle, Mrs Ross Esbenshade, Mrs Ivan Menee, Mrs Irvin Slesser, Mrs Daniel Graeff, Mrs John K Zoll, Mrs A M Hinkle, Mrs John Conrad, Mrs A T Hellman and Mrs Wirth.
A handkerchief surprise shower was given to Mrs. Raymond Schreffler born Martha Peiffer of Union Deposit on Saturday in honor of her 21st birthday. She received 109 handkerchiefs from guests from Green Park Yeagertown Loyaville Blain Lebanon Palmyra Her nhey Middletown Steelton Harrisburg Hummelstown and Union Deposit.
Two cars of pure bred Holstein cows and heifers will be shipped from Hershey to Hershey Cuba. Russell Stoner and Ralph Deppen accompany the shipment to stock Cuban plantations with milk for Havana markets.
Bebe Daniels and Antonio Moreno headline Paramount's The Exciters coming to Hershey Central Theatre Saturday January 19. Ronnie Rand a speed loving heiress faces marriage to a supposed crook seeking money for an annulment in a tale praised as unique and well supported by a capable cast.
Hershey hosts its Winter Dance Hall debut this Thursday January 24 from 8 15 to 11 15 pm. Greene s Society Orchestra Harrisburg 12 pieces will provide music with a Male Quartette performing during intermission. Admission is 50 cents plus war tax.
Hershey High School defeated Carlisle High 34 to 25 on the Men’s Club floor led by a strong team effort despite captain Magrini’s absence. A Saturday showdown with Palmyra High is set for 2 30 p m with expected large crowds and lively cheering.
The Junior Gymnasium Class of the YWCA resumes activities Wednesday afternoon January 23 at 4 30. Miss McKinatry directs the Winter Dance Wall session. All members should attend.
The second Lyceum Course by the John Elder Men s Bible Class of the Derry serene Church features the Maitland Entertainers at Hershey Central Theatre Thursday evening January 17. The trio tours eastern territory with strong vocal and instrumental acts led by Thomas Bridge J W Huffman and Raymond Shannon. Admission is 50 cents per performance with reserved seats only for Nothing But the Truth on January 31.
The Hershey Monarchs arrived in Sunbury at 8 30 for a game at the Armory but were told to go home after manager Shelly refused the 8 30 start. The Monarc hs had traveled after a 20 minute delay and a prior defeat by Sunbury High.
The Hershey Department Store basketball squad, a mix of married and single men, challenges Ashenfelter’s Wrapping department on the Men’s Club floor tonight. Manager Ashenfelter promises dark horses and may coach if needed, with a capacity crowd anticipated. If a rematch occurs next week, the store faces Bill Leithiser’s office team.
A Philadelphia Bartlett crew prays over trees on Reservoir Hill and Mansion grounds. The town’s trees planted by Mr. Hershey are debated with estimates ranging from 100 000 to 1 000 000.
The Muhlenberg College Glee Club returns to Lebanon High School auditorium with an enlarged program, replacing last year’s Hershey show. Moving pictures open the program promptly at six with tickets available at the door.
The Ladies Aid Society of Union Deposit Reformed Church hosts a chicken corn and noodle soup supper at Union Deposit firehouse on Saturday January 26. Ice cream cakes and candy will also be served.

A rural district near Utelem Lodge reports belief in witches among Hershey People. Pupils recount bewitched experiences and folk methods to counteract witches such as broomsticks under carpets, spikes in fences, and doors lined with shoes.
Miss McKinstry will start a gymnasium class for girls aged 5 to 9 on Saturday mornings at 9 in Hershey Winter Dance Hall. Fee likely 10 cents per child, depending on enrollment. Parents are encouraged to support and enroll their daughters.
Oscar Laucks appears at the Or heam Theatre Hummelstown on January 24 and 25 in Contents Unknown a mystery thriller about smugglers. Laucks leads a capable cast with Evelyn Swartz Christian Holler Bernard Laucks and more. scenic effects include a storm and an ocean liner. Admission is 35 cents with a musical sketch Between acts by Maude Taylor and Laucks.
George T. Kilgore reports distributing six crates of Kansas rabbits totaling 72 to local farms and expects seven more crates, plus 42 pheasants in wooded areas near Hershey. The Lebanon Valley Fish and Game Association funded the releases for Central Pennsylvania hunting prospects.
Evangelistic services start Sunday evening January 20 at 7 30 o clock and will continue nightly during the week at the First United Brethren Church with services held each evening at seven thirty.
The Syouna Men’s Bible Class of Holpary Trinity Keen Church will hold a social meeting Friday the 18th at their teacher Liller’s home to elect officers for the ensuing year. The notice notes plans for the group and community event.
Saturday afternoon at 2.09 o clock word reached Hershey Garage that the American Inn on West Chocolate Avenue was on fire. Firemen fought flames with help from Hershey Planing Mill workers and two water lines. by 3.00 the blaze was under control and by 3.30 nearly extinguished. Fire may have started from wiring or hosiery shop drying closet. Several families in the Inn suffered losses and will need temporary housing. Firemen named include George Feeser David Ditzler George Lafferty Walter Leibfieid Ross Strine Ira Gibble Oliver Hetrick William Belser Walter Gerlach Stewart Mahan and Wm Brinker.
The Trinity Lutheran Church class plans a sequel to The Minister's Wife's New Bonnet titled The Minister's Wife's Return. The production by young ladies and helpers led by Mrs. John F. Snavely awaits a February date at Hershey Central Theatre with tickets expected to sell fast.
Mr C S Schmidt declares Hershey will gain a much larger greenhouse soon to be erected on ground now used as the deer enclosure. The nearby park structure is in bad repair and will be torn down or remodeled for another use.
The American Legion Post 9386 will hold its regular monthly meeting at Post Headquarters on Tuesday evening January 2 at eight o clock. Important post matters will be discussed and every member is urged to attend. The entertainment committee aims to secure a speaker on the topic Adjusted Money Ration, with social committee providing a handout.
