A film screening of The Romance of Silk is set at the Hershey Department Store on Friday March 1 at 3 PM and Saturday March 2 with showings at 3 PM and 7 PM. The illustrated film covers silk culture from ancient origins to modern production, highlighting the process from silkworm to finished fabric and the fusion of Oriental skill with American innovation.
Hershey High School presented Tompkins Hired Man at Hershey Central Theatre on Thursday evening. The cast included Asa Tompkins Roy Shenk Dixey John Remington Louise and Julia with Martha Ruth Ruth and Mrs Sara Tompkins among others.
The Food Administration urges immediate individual sacrifice to save wheat and other foods for Allied forces. It calls for two wheatless days, one wheatless meal daily, one meatless day, one meatless meal daily, one porkless day, and fat and sugar saving daily. It emphasizes duty of every man, woman and child to respond for national security. Howard Heinz, Federal Food Administrator for Pennsylvania, signs.
The Food Administration approves wartime candies with little or no sugar, claiming two benefits: saving sugar and sustaining the confectionery industry. Four sugar groups are advised including chocolate and cocoa with nuts or nougats, stick candy and lemon drops, marshmallows, and gum drops and jellies.
Marguerite Clark as Bab Archibald leads a humorous plot at the Hershey Central Theatre on February 23. A hoydenish schoolgirl schemes to marry off her sister Leila while a publicity stunt for the leading man spirals into newspaper spectacle and comic misadventure.
The United States Government designates March 4 to 9 as Special Repair Week for farmers. Hershey Implement Department will host a week long machinery demonstration with competent demonstrators, inviting farmers to review their equipment and bring repair orders. The event features the latest four cylinder International kerosene tractors and promises filled repair stocks and helpful guidance.
Hershey will host War Gardens with every vacant lot listed for the project. Hershey Scouts join in, following examples in other cities. Mr. Hershey offers land for the effort, while Mr. Heilman continues work from last year and applications are soon to be announced.
The Hershey YWCA board postpones its annual meeting to Thursday February 28 at eight o clock. A year’s work report will be presented and directors for the next term elected. Members and friends are invited to attend.
Red Cross workers are invited to return to the old meeting times starting next week. Meetings will be held Monday Thursday and Saturday afternoons from 2 to 5 o'clock to assist with ongoing wartime work. Heatless Mondays noted.
The Young Men’s Bible Class at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church elected officers on Sunday. President Robert Bricker, secretary Donald Habaker, treasurer Norman Stahle, A. O. Stine, and teacher were announced.
