Rev S S Garnes pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity Hershey died at 6 30 AM Thursday after a week with influenza and rapid pleural pneumonia His brief six month pastorate left a strong mark on the community and congregation with funeral details to be announced later.
The Men’s Bible Class of Holy Trinity Church is called to an urgent meeting Friday at 7 30 P M at the church. The meeting will discuss arrangements for the funeral of Rev S S Garnes Linn Hawbecker president.
The church has not decided which services will be held on Sunday December 8. If services occur the regular schedule applies. The Mothers Club meets Tuesday December 10 at 8 PM at Hershey High School with a Christmas program and invites a large attendance.
State Health Department officials report rising risk of tuberculosis among influenza victims. Dispensaries across Pennsylvania show ongoing exam applications as more citizens seek assessment after the recent epidemic.
Hershey Red Cross to join nationwide Ameri can National Red Cross drive for 1919 with December 9 as start of voluntary contributions and December 16 as official drive. Peace may follow war but Red Cross work continues in peace times. local volunteers urged to donate, wear Christmas Roll Call badge, and join Mrs. McHeffey, Mrs. Herr, Mrs. Moyer, and Mrs. Harvey in collecting contributions.
Friday and Saturday December 6 7 feature Sergt Arthur Guy Empey in Over the Top with Lois Meredith and Jas Morrison. The film dramatizes Empey’s war narrative with trench scenes shot at Camp Wheeler Georgia and 7500 soldiers used. Showings include 8 15 PM admission 20 and 15 cents. Nazimova Toys of Fate screens Wednesday December 11 at 7 45 PM with a comedy.
A November 8 1918 letter from Belgium describes a soldier well and happy with plenty to eat and drink. He praises Y M A Knights of Columbus and Red Cross canteens for treatment and notes being with a mixed Ohio and Indiana company. He commends the officers and camaraderie, with a continuation noted on Page 3.
