The Italian Lodge at Caracas Avenue and Hillcrest Road held a three day dedication and open house for its new one story cement block lodge with brick facing. The project began March 17 and marks the lodge’s 34th year celebrating with a modern ballroom social room and offices.
William Schmehl was reelected chairman of the Derry Township Advisory Health Council at the first meeting of the new school year. Welch England was named vice chairman and Miss Virginia Strawderman secretary. Attendees included Mrs. Grace Spangler, Mrs. Helen Birstein, Dr. L. G. Fetterman, Dr. Robert Weigel, Dr. Thomas Backenstose, Fe Tau Douglas, William Fraley, Rev. B. Richard Templeton and Mrs. Elizabeth Goodwill. Mrs. Goodwill reported 1,223 pupils examined last year with 1,128 defect-free. over eighty percent of defects have been corrected. Examinations cover Grades One, Six and Twelve as a public service by local doctors.
The Hershey Community Club tennis team defeated Reading 9-0 to reclaim the Lehigh Valley League title. Hershey held sole possession of first place entering the final match, with Reading one point ahead in standings. Ken Lehman and Sam Hinkle each won singles and teamed for doubles as the program led by John McCool clinched the championship.
Parents will visit M S Hershey Junior Senior High on Thursday September 25 to meet teachers and view students books and materials. Principal George D Lange and Assistant Principal Rufus K Eby lead the event which runs 7 30 p m and features a simulated school day for seventh to ninth graders and sixth graders in the building.
