October 13 marks the 1945 death of Milton S Hershey. His work and achievements endure as a monument and source of inspiration.
Felton W. Ebersole was re elected president of the Hershey Volunteer Fire Company at the annual election. Percy Eckert was elected vice president and several officers were chosen including Eugene Gray as fire chief and Paul Hetrick Sr. as first assistant chief. The installation will be Nov 5 conducted by Clarence Speicher, who also led the fund drive that supplied a community ambulance.
Hershey High School music organizations including band chorus and orchestra announce monthly doughnut sales to cover annual expenses. Three doughnut types will be offered with delivery on the third Wednesday of each month starting early this month.
A ten-dollar bill was reported lost in Hershey with the Hershey News asked to locate the owner. The finder is urged to contact Hershey News.
The Hershey fire department sets Monday October 14 for the next scrap paper drive. The pickup crew starts collecting bundles from curbs at 5 30 p m.
A photo caption describes well dressed young models presenting clothing from Hershey Evening School 1956 57 classes. The new term is underway at Derry Township High School with Jared Horn teaching typography to David Fox and adult students in a course of typographical arts. The evening program draws a large enrollment in vocational, commercial, home making, arts, and hobbies courses alongside standard classes.
Hershey Evening School expands with a Russian language course taught by Professor Rudolf Sturm. Enrollment reaches 17 for the new class, while total evening school enrollment is 505 with 162 in trade shop, 88 in home making, 86 in business education, 82 in standard evening high school, and 137 in general education. The program, headed by Evans with Rufus K. Eby directing the standard evening high school, is in its twenty sixth year and runs until March 27, 1958.
The Tuberculosis and Health Society visited Milton Hershey School to X-ray 284 eleventh grade students and 147 faculty and staff. Earlier on September 25 the mobile unit tested 275 students at Hershey High School and 52 staff members. The free chest X-rays are part of a regional school program.
Interior Communications Electrician Third Class William D. Hesse, son of Mr and Mrs Fred D. Hesse Sr of Hershey, serves aboard the USS Willis A. Lee during Operation Strikeback. The 10 day NATO exercise in the North Atlantic ran September 19 to 28 with 150 vessels from Canada France Norway the Netherlands the UK and the US.
The Derry Township PTA outlines plans for the 1957 Halloween festival on Thursday October 31. Floyd R. Renshaw chairs the planning committee with Melvin Garner judging Brent Hancock marshals Isaiah Bombay properties and grounds Mark Henry prizes Mrs Warren Foley refreshments Mrs Ralph Horst bake sale Charles Bible dance and Walter Stuff Douglas as master of ceremonies at Hershey Stadium.
The Hershey Hi-Fi Club will host a light music program on Thursday evening October 17 in the Community Building Students’ Lounge Harrisburg. Richard Duncan of the Central YMCA Hi-Fi Club will present light music from well known shows and Carlo Nennotti’s “The Telephone” plus other vocal and instrumental pieces. All music lovers are invited to attend starting at eight o’clock.
