Civil Defense Director Louis C. Smith Jr reports Operation Alert 1955 drill “the best success to date.” Local units police and the public cooperated, traffic halted effectively, and emergency services activated with smooth, organized response. Pedestrian reaction was the main slowdown noted.
Lancaster's WGAL TV plans a July 3 5 PM kinescope replay of The Milton S Hershey Story on Hallmark Hall of Fame. Station Manager Harold E Miller says final arrangements are underway and announcements will follow. A rerun is certain.
The Pennsylvania Department of Highways undertakes a major road linking Route 422 to Airport Road near Hershey Air Park. By raising the hollow west of the hotel road 66000 yards of fill are required, taken from nearby grading. Underground cables are being relocated as part of the work. Continued on Page Three.
Johnny Weitzel of Hershey Country Club captured the thirty ninth Pennsylvania Open title after a two stage 36 and 18 hole playoff against Henry Williams Jr. Williams from Berkleigh CK. Weitzel tied 145 after 36 holes then posted a 71 in the final 18 to win over Williams 75. Davis finished amateur runner up after a playoff with James Sykes. Weitzel also equaled the course record with 65.
William C. Dearden former Milton Hershey School assistant manager and alumnus was chosen president of the Hershey Foremen's Club. Earl J. Spangler became vice president, Allen M. Huber was reelected treasurer, and secretaries Russell Aungst and Howard H. Baum were elected. C. Kline Kuntz was named assistant secretary for Hershey Estates at a ladies night meeting with guest speaker William Fry of Franklin and Marshall College.
