New School Tours By Hershey Optimist Club
The Hershey Optimist Club led by Walter Douglas toured Derry Township’s new elementary school with over 30 members. Principal A Sterling King showcased the modern facility serving kindergarten through third grade, ready for the upcoming term. The group discussed Charter Day plans for September 25 with Park Golf Club as headquarters, featuring a dance and Hershey visit.

Plane Post Staffers Win Duty Awards
Certificates for 100 hours of service with the Derry Township Ground Observer Corps were awarded this week. Chief Observer Russell Aungst presented Century Club certificates to his wife Ellen and daughter Gretchen Aungst. LeRoy Woodling earned a 750 hour bar and merit pin for civilian volunteer on guard work. Ida Herbst received 250 hour merit pin, and daughter-in-law Marlin Herbst earned a 500 hour badge. Other 100 hour awards went to Emma Koch Larry Ganse Lester Kauffman Robert Seltzer and Harry Scheetz.

Pennsylvania Dutch Days grows from 1949 fair to 140000 crowd
The Pennsylvania Dutch Days festival at Hershey Park expands from a 1949 one day picnic drawing 25000 people to a three day event last year with 140000 attendees. The celebration began August 27 1949 as an outing for members of the Hershey Evening School dialect class and a permanent committee was soon formed.
