The Hershey Rose Garden reports its second bloom peak with more than 42 000 rose bushes and 1 000 varieties. Visitors from 42 states and 13 countries enjoy tulips and annuals while open daily 10 am to 8 pm with free admission and parking.
Hershey area schools will begin full-day sessions this year. Milton Hershey School marks Teachers' Day on August 26, with Sunday services on August 28 and classes starting August 29. MHS last day is June 12, 1961, while M.S. Hershey Jr Sr High opens September 6 with teachers' days August 30 and 31 and September 1.
The Pennsylvania State Police Rodeo performs 15 acts in multiple venues starting Hershey August 15 with 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM shows at Villanova Stadium and a rain date August 16. It travels to Bethlehem August 19 and Hershey August 26 during the 12th Annual Pennsylvania Dutch Days. Major Hilding C. Johnson directs, with Col. Frank G. McCartney’s police commission.
A 1911 era property at 32 Java Avenue, once home to Maurice and Mrs Koser, is razed by Gilbert Lugar. Historic details include a Hershey Electric Co. statement from 1917 and a dated inscription “Erected By Marshall G Dailey 1911” amid other era notes. The parcel is among nine slated for demolition with no final redevelopment decision yet.
Craftsmen from across Pennsylvania prepare for the 12th annual Pennsylvania Dutch Days in Hershey August 25 26 27 28. Demonstrations include blacksmithing candle dipping basketry and an antique sale with 300 head of prize dairy stock 4H and FFA competitions and a dialect Dutch church service. Dr. Raymod I Lindquist will speak at a Sunday service in Hershey Community Theatre. Indoor crafts are shown in the Sports Arena.
