Texas Parks and Wildlife has drawn more than 300 nominations for birding and wildlife viewing trails spanning from the border to the Panhandle. Deadline is December 31. Nominees should give directions, a site description, activity periods, and indicate accessibility. Guards indicted in capital murder death of 5 month old
Calvin Joseph Smith 28 and Dhetha Jones 32 both Huntsville guards indicted this month on capital murder charges in the Nov 21 death of 5 month old Kiana Smith. Bond set at 250000 each and they remain in Walker County Jail. Smith active as correctional officer at Ellis Unit while Jones inactive as of Dec 3. Records show Smith took the baby to Huntsville Memorial Hospital two days before her death after she suffered pulmonary arrest from abdominal trauma. The infant died after transfer to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

GBRA promotes aquifer data collection program
The Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority is launching a district wide effort to collect aquifer data. General manager Bill West Jr notes the Trinity Edwards Carrizo and Gulf Coast aquifers span Kendall to Refugio counties. The project teams GBRA USGS and UTSA Center for Water Research to compile candidate wells and property locations and seeks volunteers to participate by contacting Weldon Hammond or George Ozuna.

EAA approves 2001 budget and fees in San Antonio
Edwards Aquifer Authority directors approved the 2001 budget of 11.3 million dollars and aquifer management fees on December 18. Municipal and industrial users pay 23 dollars per acre foot, irrigators 3 dollars per base acre foot and 4.60 dollars for unrestricted rights above the base. The board adopted several Texas Administrative Code subchapters and approved joint funding with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to study factors affecting Texas wild rice, plus extended an agreement with the NRCS on woody species management near Government Canyon and Honey Creek. New directors were sworn in by Chief Justice Phil Hardberger to serve through December 1, 2004.
