Escaped convicts accused in officer slaying
Seven capital murder warrants are filed against escaped convicts linked to the killing of Irving police Officer Aubry Hawkins during a Christmas Eve robbery at Oshman’s Supersports USA. The suspects, armed and dangerous, escaped from the Connally Unit in Kenedy on December 13. Hawkins, 29, married with a 9 year old son, died after being shot at the store near Texas Stadium. The gang seized weapons and gear from a guard tower and prompted a police search across Texas cities including San Antonio and Dallas. The escapees include Joseph Garcia, Randy Halprin, Larry Harper, Patrick Murphy Jr, Donald Newbury, George Rivas, and Michael Rodriguez, with various murder and burglary sentences.
