The Lakeshore region and Manitowoc area cope with migrant workers joining communities seasonally. The LMOS United Migrant Opportunity Service guides integration while local farms attract workers who may settle in the Lakeshore area.
A state Veterans Affairs Board meeting in Madison was canceled after Dane County Circuit Judge William Sachtsen issued a temporary injunction. A prior injunction by Judge Charles Jones also halted a meeting for the same reason. The actions allege the meetings were illegal because they were called by board members who had resigned.
Dutch children held four days by South Moluccan terrorists resumed school today in Bovensmilde after being freed. Eleven days later they were sent to Juthe town’s other school operated by the Dutch Reformed Church as parents met with officials.
In Pittsburgh a protest by a 10 million member coalition formed by AARP and the National Retired Teachers Association denounces mandatory retirement. Executive director Harnet Miller vows to push for flexible policies allowing workers to use their abilities and experience while wishing to continue in the workforce.
A 42 foot charter fishing boat on Chesapeake Bay ignored warnings and capsized after a 10 foot wave. Coast Guard says four people drowned nine more were missing. fourteen aboard were rescued by another charter vessel. One victim’s identity was released.
Washington notices say H R Haldeman and John Mitchell spend final weeks at home to wrap affairs before reporting by noon June 22 to federal prison for 2 to 8 year terms from 1975. The end of the Watergate criminal proceedings follows Nixon’s resignation after the cover up and burglary scandal.
National Weather Service notes moderation tonight with readings near 40s and high temps generally in the 60s to mid 70s. Tuesday night into Wednesday brings scattered showers mainly in the south, with clear to partly cloudy skies through Wednesday and a light warmup thereafter. Local readings show Manitowoc and Two Rivers dipping into the 40s overnight, then mid 50s by dawn Tuesday, with Tuesday highs in the 50s to near 60s.
Two Rivers approves a resolution backing an interurban bus link with Manitowoc to extend Vanitowro bus service and adds an expanded intra city route. The hourly plan becomes a 90 minute loop, with Downtown Manitowoc transfers and northside connections at Vid Ces Mall, linking through the city and returning to Manitowoc.
Manitowoc Mayor Anthony Dufek told the Common Council the planned move of mail volume processing from Manitowoc to Green Bay is delayed until early 1979. He warned the delay will reduce jobs, raise misaddressed mail, and demoralize workers in Manitowoc as postal officials push the transfer to a sectional center. The delay followed a June 1 letter from district manager Koenigs and a protest from Dufek and others.
The Common Council adopted an amendment to allow decorative sidewalks by property owners after written application. The measure, approved 7 to 2 with two aldermen absent, aims to make sidewalk enforcement more flexible and acceptable. Brick sidewalks already exist and would be permitted. costs rise for decorative walks funded by abutting properties or developers.
Crowds cheered as Queen Elizabeth II marked 25 years on the throne with a day of pomp at Buckingham Palace and a service at St Paul’s Cathedral. Prince Philip joined the parade of open carriages while the monarch thanked Britons and Commonwealth for loyalty. Rain sprinkled the morning, then sunshine, as the royal couple traveled from the palace through central London in a day of royal pageantry.
