Nixon campaign linked lawyers say they pressed two successive Justice Department chiefs over the Feb 1 1972 antitrust suit against Associated Milk Producers Inc for alleged coercive marketing. Murray M Chotiner and Marion E Harrison described discussions with Atty Gen John N Mitchell and later Richard G Kleindienst, denying requests for favorable treatment while noting dairy money to Nixon. Harrison said the suit followed an unusually short 24 hour window before action and that McLaren had just left to become a federal judge.
Los Angeles AP reports television personality Ed McMahon is sued for allegedly breaking a contract to boost the Teamsters Union image in a case valued at 6.75 million dollars. The suit seeks damages and relief for breach of agreement.
Gerald Ford takes oath as 40th vice president pledging loyalty to Nixon and dedication to truth. In a packed House, 387 to 35 approved his nomination under the 25th Amendment after Agnew’s resignation. Ford vows to uphold the Constitution and to preside over the Senate with independence.
Washington AP Dwight L. Chapin former assistant to the president pleaded innocent to four counts of making false statements before the Watergate grand jury about Donald Segretti activities. He was released on recognizance as trial set for Feb 19. Segretti pleaded guilty to three misdemeanors and faces cooperation with prosecutors. Separate probe seeks cause of an 18 minute gap in a June 1972 White House tape.
A revised snowmobile ordinance recommended by the Manitowoc Common Council committee would permit city snowmobiling only on approved legal routes at speeds up to 10 mph. Routes require police approval and owner permission, with season Sept through April usage and registration 48 hours in advance. The plan allows access to outside trails via private land with consent, limiting city riding to Silver Creek Park beyond designated routes.
Eugene Schmidt age 23 of rural Kaukauna dies at Appleton Memorial Hospital from injuries suffered Tuesday afternoon in a sideswipe crash on Highway 10 near Calumet County Trunk M five miles west of Forest Junction. Investigators say Schmidt was eastbound when struck by a westbound auto driven by Daniel Fredericks age 30 of Appleton. a third car is suspected. Schmidt suffered broken ribs and ruptured spleen and respiratory failure. The accident occurred around 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Wisconsin registered its first official subzero temperature with Eau Claire posting six below zero and Spooner at eight below. Other readings included seven below at Land O Lakes and four below at Eagle River while Rhinelander and Park Falls were two below. Highs reached the upper 20s to low 40s with a shift to milder, grey conditions mixed with possible rain or snow north by Saturday night.
