Mangy Indian Ponies to be Killed for Disease Spread

The State Board of Agriculture ordered drastic action to stamp out mange among ponies at Castle Rock and nearby areas. Sheriff Shatt and State Veterinarian McLean examined 600 to 700 affected animals, mainly cayuses from Indian reservations, with some white-owned horses also infected. Indians were given three months to cure their stock or face killings. ten badly affected ponies were buried after being shot. White owners urged to dip their animals at least twice, with a plan to build a union dipping area during the spring roundup. The vet will recheck in July, and any remaining cases will be slain to prevent spread. Nearby settlers eye irrigation efforts to reclaim land and reduce reliance on government aid.
