State to Appeal Swamp Land Ruling in Klamath
Salem governor Chamberlain received the General Land Office decision of November 16 adverse to the state's claim to swamp land in the Klamath Indian reservation. If unreversed on appeal to the Secretary of the Interior, Oregon would gain neither swamp land nor indemnity land. With at least 100000 at stake, the attorney general was directed to appeal and the governor sought congressional aid to hire Washington counsel. The GLO held title to swamp land within the reservation vested in the Indians, leaving Oregon without rights under the swamp land grant of 1800.
