Death of Albert Farling in World War I Service

Albert Walter Farling 23, of Putnam and Marshall counties, died October 9 1918 at Fort McHenry Baltimore after contracting influenza and pneumonia while serving as a truck driver with Company F 302nd water tank train. He left a father Frank Farling and siblings James and Thomas L. Farling and Blanche Mae Saner. Henry business men paused, lines formed with flags, and a Putnam funeral followed at Magnolia.

Bad Wreck at Tonica Kills One in Train Collision

An Illinois Central wreck near Tonica on a foggy Monday morning killed a banana messenger, seriously injured another crewman, and left a brakeman with a broken collar bone. Conductor Frank Meyers was crushed and hospitalised. flames consumed the caboose, the pilot, and a carload of live chickens. The Clinton railroad office cleared debris within hours. Burglars Target Hartley Market in Night Shootout

Edward Haddon, night watchman, spotted two men at Hartley’s meat market rear door last Sunday night. Four shots rang out as the pair fled toward Main Street, halted by Walter Cook, and a search found a skeleton key and railroad iron near the rear door. Bullet holes appeared in the adjacent poultry shop the next morning, with bullets measured as 44s. Two strangers were seen at East Park row and depot, then disappeared from the city.

Robbers Break Into Campbell Store at Sparland

Burglars cracked the Campbell grocery at Sparland by breaking a front door pane and blasting the safe on pay day for miners. explosions woke residents as two men fled, trackers followed faint footprints toward Chillicothe but the thieves escaped with only a soap shard amid debris from the blast.

Matinee horse races crown two day meet at Big 4 track

A two day race meet at Big 4 track drew large crowds and featured multiple pace and trot events. Billy Gordon won the 2:30 pace, Jack Combs claimed the 2:19 trot, and Walter Patchen led in the free for all pace. County Clerk candidate Lawrence D Gregory promoted the ballot. The Farling funeral procession honored a fallen comrade with a citywide demonstration.

The Henry High School class of 1911 held a reunion across the Illinois River at a woods spot with a beefsteak roast. Attendees shared stories of school days while roasting potatoes and beef, Charcoal fires burned, and many ate multiple buns and steaks.
