Illinois River Bridge War and Navigation Barriers
In 1912 readers recall the Illinois La Salle Burlington fixed bridge dispute part of the bridge war era. Protest by river men over navigability restrictions led to court challenges and a Chicago convention June 4 to seek removal or draw changes. The piece notes historic navigation on the Illinois, including 1844 Superb voyage and 1836 Pittsburg steamer arrivals, arguing no navigable stream should be obstructed. It also promotes Electric Bitters as a malaria remedy and health tonic.
