The issue notes the death of Mrs Jeremiah Drake of Putnam with funeral set for 2 30 pm Saturday in Putnam's Christian church. It also reports on changing local officials including G Rennick being superseded by E D McCabe and William J Steube leaving as cashier.
Theodore F Lash, a Civil War veteran born in Farmington, died May 25 1914 at Henry Illinois. He served in Co G 170th Ohio Infantry from 1864 to war end, lived in Magnolia and Henry, married Sarah C Wabel May 25 1873, and left a son Robert R in Henry. A G A R and Masonic funeral rites were held with service at his home and grave in Henry cemetery.
The 1913 Illinois law makes it a misdemeanor to sell trade or give away any toy pistol that can shoot blank cartridges. Enforcement begins July 1 1913. Penalties include fines from five to twenty five dollars.
Commencement exercises tonight at Henry Opera House start at 8 o clock with instrumental music and glee club singing. Rev J E Mercer will deliver the invocation and Rev B Carpenter will give the address Making Our Own Worlds. Diplomas will be presented by Prof W E King. The class has 13 graduates: Wills Aukland Clara Brown Claudia Bickerman Marion Doyle Florence King Minerva Mackenzie Louis Meier Mary Schubert Otis Stevens Irma Waughop Alice Williams Margaret Wallace Irene Wallace.
The J Howard Williams family gathered Sunday at their Edward street home after an accident to Mr Williams. Attendees included Gardner Williams of the Oxbow and Latta with her two sons, Myrtle Hess of Chicago, Meta and William, plus Miss Paterson the nurse in training. Also present were Ed J Metcalf and family visiting C E Burt and J E Quinn for dinner, with the Buick auto recently purchased by Metcalf to serve the family.
A Henry chapter event reports a large attendance in the assembly room on Monday with Mrs. S. L. Clift as matron and L. R. Phillips as patron. Four candidates were initiated and a collation followed, increasing local membership to about 100.
The Woman's Club wrapped up its year with a gathering at Mrs. Nellis G. Hartley's home on June 1. President Mrs. Theodore Disosway led the session with reports on Forestry and Bird protection, music, poetry, and talks by Mrs. McLanahan and others, noting activities in forest conservation and local nature projects.
A fragment mentions Old Ireland and Home Rule with an optimistic verse about happiness. A Mother’s Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday June 9 at 3:55 p m at Mrs A G Mikabrand’s home with invited mothers to attend and hear helpful topics. The Woman's Relief Corps meets Saturday June 8 at 1 0 at a hall.
An exercise titled Children’s Day in Many Lands will be presented next Sunday night at 8 o’clock. A cordial invitation is extended to the public. James Wherry his wife and son of Putnam attended services last Sunday. Miss Mary Broline was baptized by Rev H C Reichel last Sunday. Hoping more young people will follow the example of those who have recently obeyed their Savior.
The Methodist church announces next Sabbath activities led by Pastor J. E. Mercer. Sunday school at 9:45 with M. L. Coan supervising. Men's Bible class during Sunday school. public worship at 11 and 8 led by the pastor. Epworth League at 7. Midweek prayer Thursday. A “Gems of Praise” program is planned for Children's Day on Sunday June 14 with an open invitation to all services.
The church hosts Holy Eucharist at 7:30 am and 9 46 am with a sermon. Sunday school meets then. Evening prayer and bishop of Quincy confirmation at 8 pm. F W Hafst.
St Joseph’s chapel introduces daily first mass at 7 30 with Sunday service at 9 30 and a Sunday sermon. Sunday evening services and sermon follow at 7 30. Friday evening sermons in June honor the Sacred Heart at 7 30.
The Saratoga Mts Church held Memorial services last Sunday with a large attendance in autos. Rev Calhout of Lacon gave the address and veterans were decorated. The Epworth League social is planned for June 5 at Miss Mary Han num's home. Children’s Day is set for June 14 with Sunday school at 2 and public worship at 3.
George Vogelzang and relatives visit in Henry while Miss Lucy Mateer visits the Worley home. Decoration Day attendees include Ear Wyckoff and Mrs Vogelsang. The piece notes trips, baccalaureate services, and local business changes including billiard hall sale to Jansen & Rehn. An electric shower damages Saratoga, crops benefit from rain, and farm bequests support Methodist schools.
