Forged Checks Target Area Merchants Then Vanish
A Friday night scam in Putnam and Henry targeted local merchants with forged checks on Wm Wheeler and Henry National Bank names. The con man, described as 35, slim, with brown hair, posed as a buyer, cashed several $20 and $25 checks, and fled on a midnight train, leaving ten merchants burned. Evidence links similar fraud to Streator, with the suspect using company branded checks to seem legitimate.
