Food Pirates Endeavor To Control New Crops
Reported in Stephenson county that Chicago speculators offered 90 cents a bushel for unharvested potatoes with contracts to leave crops in the ground. Farmers would be paid by a traveling representative who could buy later or have crops dug out, enabling price manipulation. Most local farmers reportedly refused such terms. A separate note mentions a Buena Vista township farmer observing wild geese returning to a former nesting site with their young, hoping to integrate tame geese into his flock. The piece ends noting the need to clearly mark and pave extensive road mileage amid heavy auto traffic.
