First Wheat and Oats Enter City Market This Week

Miss Mary Steele from west of Henry leads this year’s grain by delivering wheat to the Greenlee elevator Monday. She owned 25 acres yielding 11 bushels per acre. Wimner Schlosser, same neighborhood, brought the first oats with W. W. Dewey buying his threshed oats Wednesday. Charles Dewey predicts a bumper oat crop as tests run 34 pounds versus 21 last year. Jack Applen did the threshing at both sites.

Hauber Heads to Springfield for Three Week Vacation

Ben Hauber the American Express man leaves tonight for Springfield Missouri to spend three weeks with his parents Mr and Mrs M Hauber. During his absence Mr Horner of Keewanee will manage the local express business.

Dexter Travis First Drafted Man Seeks Marine Guard

Dexter Travis, the first drafted man to attempt enlistment, visited Peoria on Monday offering to join the Marines but was rejected for being light of weight. He plans to appear before the exemption board in Lacon on Monday.

Red Cross Benefit Ice Cream Social Planned

The U S Sunday school class of the M BE church in Henry will host an ice cream social on Griffin's lawn Saturday evening August 4. Proceeds support the local Red Cross chapter with the slogan Everybody do your bit.

Popular Henry Couple United in Wedlock at BE Marys Church

Henry and Hoa Smith wed at St Marys Church Tuesday morning with Rev Fr Andrew Schafer officiating. Attendants were Peter Wunder and wife. The bride, a clerk at Watercott Co, is popular in Henry. groom works at Avery Works in Peoria. They plan to reside near the depot with Mrs Joan Ford’s residence.

Illinois Law On Hunting Reforms Despite Governor Veto

The legislature failed to enact a new game law as the governor vetoed it. Until a signed bill, the old law stands, delaying licenses and keeping season dates in effect. Deputies across Illinois warn sportsmen to avoid fines for hunting without licenses or out of season.

U S class members hosted by Mrs James Case at country home

The U S class of the M E church were entertained at Mrs James Case's country home yesterday afternoon, traveling by autos from the city. The afternoon included sociability and part of the teachers' training course. Refreshments were served and guests enjoyed a delightful afternoon with Mrs Case. Guests listed include Mrs id Ketchum of Shickley Nebraska and Mrs James Harta of Carroll Iowa.
