Local items report marriages and births, a daughter named Florence Catherine Marie, a death of William E Anderson aged 59 with services at Main street home, church tributes, a horse injury and death, and community scenes from Henry township including club meetings and road work.
Miss Mary Steele from west of Henry leads this year’s grain by delivering wheat to the Greenlee elevator Monday. She owned 25 acres yielding 11 bushels per acre. Wimner Schlosser, same neighborhood, brought the first oats with W. W. Dewey buying his threshed oats Wednesday. Charles Dewey predicts a bumper oat crop as tests run 34 pounds versus 21 last year. Jack Applen did the threshing at both sites.
Ben Hauber the American Express man leaves tonight for Springfield Missouri to spend three weeks with his parents Mr and Mrs M Hauber. During his absence Mr Horner of Keewanee will manage the local express business.
Dexter Travis, the first drafted man to attempt enlistment, visited Peoria on Monday offering to join the Marines but was rejected for being light of weight. He plans to appear before the exemption board in Lacon on Monday.
The U S Sunday school class of the M BE church in Henry will host an ice cream social on Griffin's lawn Saturday evening August 4. Proceeds support the local Red Cross chapter with the slogan Everybody do your bit.
All members of the Henry lodge are requested to attend the business meeting tomorrow Friday.
Henry and Hoa Smith wed at St Marys Church Tuesday morning with Rev Fr Andrew Schafer officiating. Attendants were Peter Wunder and wife. The bride, a clerk at Watercott Co, is popular in Henry. groom works at Avery Works in Peoria. They plan to reside near the depot with Mrs Joan Ford’s residence.
The legislature failed to enact a new game law as the governor vetoed it. Until a signed bill, the old law stands, delaying licenses and keeping season dates in effect. Deputies across Illinois warn sportsmen to avoid fines for hunting without licenses or out of season.
The U S class of the M E church were entertained at Mrs James Case's country home yesterday afternoon, traveling by autos from the city. The afternoon included sociability and part of the teachers' training course. Refreshments were served and guests enjoyed a delightful afternoon with Mrs Case. Guests listed include Mrs id Ketchum of Shickley Nebraska and Mrs James Harta of Carroll Iowa.
Sunday school led by William Knight at 10 4 am. Communion 11 am. Y P C E prayer meeting 8 pm with Dr. Murphy sermon Safety Aint. Special music by choir and Mrs Broline. Dr. Murphy to speak at Putnam in forenoon with Mrs J J Huard. Sunday night large audience with Mr and Mrs J J Huard and Mrs James Case reading. Thursday Empty Heart prayer meeting and pastor talk. M E Church 9 45 am Sunday School Mrs Wheeler. Men’s Bible class 11 am and 8 pm public worship 7 pm Epworth Leage. J E Mercer Pastor.
St Joseph Church posts Mass times for Sunday and weekday services. First Mass 7 30 am, second Mass 9 30 am, weekday Mass 7 20 am with Rev Fr M J Brennan pastor. Masses move earlier during hot summer months.
St Marys Church schedules an 8 oclock mass and a 10 oclock English sermon with a 230 pm vespers and benediction. A new agent L B Phillips replaces G L Severs at the station. Severs moves to Lacona Illinois. The St Pauls Lutheran excursion company visits Henry aboard the steamboat Columbia. Clarence Latourette reports guard duty with the National Guard at Rock Island Arsenal.
