Fire destroys Hartley slaughter house on riverfront
Saturday night a fire at J J Hartley’s slaughter house and rendering plant along the river destroyed an old 40 year old building used for rendering and storage. Loss estimated around 500 dollars with no insurance. Fire spread to nearby shingles and alarm failed to prevent major damage. Local history notes the site as one of three river grain warehouses from the early days. The cause remains unknown and rebuilding plans are unclear. Will Klein reports a strong wheat crop yield of 456 bushels from 12 acres this season.
