A sudden death in Saratoga township Lewis County follows a basket social at a school hall. Joseph Greenlee died around 10 pm while returning home with his wife after attending the event. A large crowd paid respects during the services and burial at Henry cemetery.
Charles Greenlee a Saratoga Township settler born February 1 1834 died January 17 1902 in Saratoga township Marshall county Illinois from apoplexy while visiting Henry township. He moved west with friends in 1856 returned to farm in Saratoga then Henry town ship and later bought a home on Main street in town. Funeral at Presby terian Church conducted by Rev R L Campbell with many relatives and neighbors in attendance.
William Payton, born July 27 1889 in Henry, died January 18 1902 at his parents’ home at age 42 years 5 months. He suffered rheumatism but was not bedridden. he rose for meals, spoke with a companion, then fainted. Dr Cromwell assisted but he died. Funeral services were at St Joseph’s church conducted by Rev Fr Kinnery. He leaves three sisters and a brother. Pallbearers included Wim Green and others. attendees traveled from nearby towns.
S H Condit of Los Angeles writes January 15 1902 praising the climate and prospects of Los Angeles. He notes rising construction activity with 1500 buildings, 40 000 to 50 000 tourists, cheap lodging, wages from two to seven dollars a day, and an electric streetcar system. He predicts population growth to 250 000 within a decade and mentions diverse visitors including nobles and foreigners.
An advertisement extols Peruna as a universal remedy praised by Carl T. Roberts of Falls City Nebraska and others. It claims cures for croup pneumonia pleurisy nervousness and stomach trouble with extensive family use and substantial savings on doctors. The piece urges readers to obtain a free booklet from The Peruna Medicine Co. Columbus Ohio.
Lee Gilmer under construction a large sectional map of the United States 8 by 16 feet with state, county, railroad and post office details. When finished it will be the largest sectional map in the United States and serve as a valuable educational reference. Church notes report multiple services across churches with sermons, solos, and music, plus Sunday school and youth activities.
Frank Johnson, merchant tailor, announces seven seasons in Henry and surrounding areas with growing business. He thanks customers for their support and promises continued careful workmanship as the best clothes for the money in town, aiming for widespread satisfaction.
D Watercoli of J Watercott Co Hs in Grand Rapids announces plans to enlarge inventory for the coming season. The firm will buy in carload lots and prepare for a busy period, noting no small margin furniture trade in the state and highlighting four large local furniture businesses.
Rumor holds that Rock Leland plans to add a combination coach on the S line. The note expresses cautious hope that the plan is true and suggests it should have occurred long ago.
