Dear Spree Ends in Fine After Blind Horse Accident
Miss Inez Broline, daughter of P O Broline, was run over by a buggy driven by Arthur Robinson and T Smith on the Henry pike near Sandy Creek bridge. The horse was blind and the girl suffered a concussion and multiple injuries. The two men pled guilty in James Chambers court, each fined $100 plus costs. Smith later settled $200 with Mr Broline. The total cost to Smith for fines and damages reached $425.

Fire destroys Lacon Home Journal plant and nearby buildings
A February 19 blaze in Lacon wiped out the Home Journal printing plant with all contents and ruined the National saloon and William Riddell's livery barn. Damage totals include $5,000 value for the paper and $1,000 insurance. the saloon $1,000. the livery building $2,000. The only saving grace was horses and carriages saved from the latter with crowd help. The night watchman was reportedly absent. The Home Journal, dating to 1837, faces rebuilding with a cement plant expected on the old site and future publication.

An antique missive by Rev N C Weede from Whitefield township Marshall county describes early farming conditions. It notes land at 2 to 3 dollars an acre and staple prices oats 35 cents corn 45 cents wheat 70 cents potatoes 60 cents with a Lafon market. The letter urged eastern relatives to migrate to central Illinois and settle near Northampton Chillicothe.

Mrs Mary Keegan Dies at 80 In Putnam Area
Mrs Mary Keegan wife of Michael Keegan of Putnam died at St Josephs home in Peoria on Tuesday February 22 aged 80. She was the mother of Mrs Guy Forrest of this city. Funeral at St Josephs church Friday at 9 am with Rev Fr Dooling officiating a requiem high mass. Interment west of Putnam.

The Wo man’s club met Monday Feb. 12 at Mrs. Ida Ketchum’s home. Three new members were elected: Mrs. Lucas, Miss Arlene Hunter, and Miss Alice Gilpin. Mrs. Hendrick gave a paper on favorite authors and read poems by Longfellow and Whittier. The meeting adjourned to meet in two weeks with Mrs. Hannum, with a social hour and refreshments. Firemen Recue Hill Garage From Major Blaze
Early Tuesday around 8 30 a fire crew rushed to J O Hill’s residence where his garage burned heavily. The city water works and hose crew contained the blaze quickly, sparing nearby structures. Hill thanks the volunteers and praises their readiness and skill. John Spencer of Aurora is confined at home with a breathing illness and remains unable to work.

The Ladies Aid of the Presbyterian church held a Washington’s birthday supper on Tuesday Feb 22 in church parlors. Colonial decor included Mr and Mrs G M Locke as Washington and Martha with Old Glory background. A cherry tree log cabin and cherry motifs adorned tables. 100 meals were prepared with some later shortages. Receipts totaled 40 dollars with a cake raffle of 75 cents.
