January 1, 1918 program featuring Wagner's Six Piece Orchestra to raise funds for Red Cross relief. Good cheer themed event promotes justice peace and community help with honor.
Mrs. George A Burt leads a Henry Red Cross membership push with volunteers listing 252.25 collected so far. A community effort includes classes on surgical dressings, charity boxes, sweaters and socks, and a January 1 dance at the opera house to aid the Red Cross chapter.
In a letter from France dated November 24 1917 Will Applen of Company B 12th aEngr Rgt describes the big drive the tank advances and shelling. He notes hauling wounded and prisoners, visiting Fritz trenches, scarce fruit and tea rather than coffee, mail shortages, and hopes for home soon. He mentions engineers proximity and asks news of friends and local papers.
The Henry Red Cross society receives notes from Thomas A. Harney of Company B 16th Infantry AEF France and Private Frank Latourette thanking donors for comfort kits. Harney notes cold winter ahead and snow. Latourette mentions trenches and a greeting from Paris. Junior Red Cross notes report progress in knitting projects and 57 members.
Local note reports Marshall county paid $1200 for ballots, calling it highway robbery. LaSalle county paid $900, later settled at $460, with the editorial remark that the claim was excessive and unnecessary.
The La Salle County board debated a county attorney report on a pending suit by Richard Sheehan for printers' bills totaling 1906.10. A proposed settlement of 450 was presented. The document also lists years and printers for county ballots, noting 1916 as the first year women voted and detailing extra ballots and costs. The board approved the charges, while critics accused the Lacan Democrat editor of manipulating figures and attacked rival editor Sorrels with hostile remarks.
Paul Grieves L. D. Gregory and J. F. Schureman wife of Lacon attended the Red Cross union meeting on Henry Sunday night. Schureman is new editor of the Lacon Journal seen as a good man though bald headed. The call urges every home with Red Cross member to display the service flag in windows citywide.
