Raymond Thomas of Putnam escaped a blaze when alcohol in his Maxwell radiator leaked onto a hot engine after a fan chain broke. After national prohibition amendment passes both houses in Washington Illinois drys prepare a state drive to push the next general assembly to vote dry. They claim the last senate was dry by thirteen votes and the house wet by about eight and vow a statewide campaign to secure ratification and a wartime unity of effort. The message stresses total commitment to victory and rejection of any peace talks while war lasts.
Collector of Internal Revenue E. D. McCabe announces a federal income tax officer will visit multiple towns in Marshall County from January to February 1918 to help taxpayers file returns at no cost. Estimates predict 2300 taxpayers in the county. Returns for 1917 are due by March 1, 1918, and penalties apply for noncompliance.
A pleasant W C T U gathering met Tuesday at Mrs George Helper's home. With Mrs Paskell absent, Mrs Wheeler opened the session. Songs, prayers, readings, and a "White Ribbon Rally" duets followed while members knit and some sewed for Christmas. The group discussed Prohibition's House passage and anticipated further constitutional action as more states dry. Santa Claus tours Henry and local stores delighted many children. An ecumenical gathering at the Presbyterian church was announced with a tree supper and year end reports.
