Early dawn Saturday report of Theophilus Keller's suicide in his shop chamber shocks the village. The 66 year old undertaker faced spells of insanity and stomach illness, left after supper, burial Saturday at 2 p.m. Rev H. Briok preached to a large crowd. He leaves a wife, a daughter, a son in town, and married daughters distant.
The funeral of Frank was held at the SL church on Thankgiving day with Rev Denning in the pulpit. Ennepin Lodge 1181 has purchased a fine organ for lodge use and plans a showy routine for members. Frank Ham is ill, James shows slow rheumatism recovery, and Andrew Hartenhower arrived at his mother's before becoming a parent of a girl. Lizzie Smith recovers from intermittent fever while river troubles fade. Stanton's Jubilee Singers visit Thursday and Jonnie Holman at Zenor's Hall this week.
The body of George Harlan was buried today in the Putnam cemetery after funeral services at the Church of Christ conducted by Elder John Wherry. Harlan was a well known, universally respected man whose loss will be deeply felt. A one month joint grave marker was recently placed at Henry Hunter's grave. Mrs W Kelso closes her school this week.
About 1 30 Friday morning November 25 a storm of ice and fire consumed a brick dwelling on Edward Street south of Kabler’s carriage works. Occupied by Harry Staven son, the house burned totally with only parlor furniture saved. Losses exceed 250 for Stevenson and 400 for Koehler with no insurance. Fire likely from a defective flue and hot pipe igniting woodwork. The building, erected by Richard Dikes in 1850 61, stood as a local landmark. Koehler plans to rebuild or convert the site for a modern residence.
Mr John Morgan plans a new frame butcher shop on Second street after tearing down the Maxwell lot building next to H J Grawburn. NS C Brown will use the vacated building as a feed store. Joseph Kontiger enlarges his saloon, Joseph Schick relocates his barn with a 26 by 26 foot addition and wind powered lake feeder, I W Camery builds a large hay barn north of his house, and a new residence is expected next season.
Services held at the M E church with Rev J B Glenden opening prayer and Rev W Nium delivering a well received sermon. The mixed choir sang moderately as the attendance remained steady and the editor notes this will be continued in next issue.
