Federal Judge restrains Columbia damages suits in partial order
Federal Judge Louis FitzHenry signed a monition restraining all persons from filing suits against Captain Herman F. Mehl owner of the steamer Columbia for damages from the July fifth sinking. I. R. Wasson is appointed commissioner to receive claims with hearings set for the first Monday of December. The order limits liability to the value of the remaining steamer and directs publication in the Peoria Star. The ruling also restricts court actions across districts and includes public notice and process provisions.

Nest of pro Germanism under investigation
Federal Officer Kerrick probes Rev. C R Egle pastor of the Central Mennonite church near Flanagan and local draft board members at Pontiac. The hearing cites dissension against the United States over conscientious objection and pro German ideas. Egle’s son George C Egle refused Camp Wheeler service, and Egle advised him. Other members also refused uniforms, while many congregants oppose the pastor’s stance. The case highlights tensions in a Mennonite community where German language use is being reduced.
