Henry District 35 school board election elects Steele
Last Saturday in Henry city hall the district No 35 school board election produced Matthew Steele as the only printed candidate after delays and a late female voter bloc caused confusion. J O Hill briefly considered presidency, Will Sievers won a board seat but Segraves resigned. Steele and Carrie Hillabrand became top vote getters for three-year terms. A subsequent presidency election appears required per district law.

Government takes over Mississippi River boats
The Streckfus line steamers Quincy and Dubuque will be taken over by the government for wartime use between St Louis and New Orleans, ending packet service between Minneapolis and St Louis this year. The St Paul will be rebuilt as an excursion vessel, while the Morning Star shifts to the Ohio River. The plan envisions a through water freight route from the river head to the open sea, with a $25 million outlay and 30 boats and barges to connect St Louis, St Paul, and New Orleans.
