Liberty League founder speaks at Marshall County meeting

Tilden Burg founder and president of the Corn Belt Liberty League visited Marshall County for the first time to address a meeting at the court house in Laurin. State's attorney Waltye A. Walker spoke on the legal aspects of the farm act as Burg outlined the league's origin and growth from 1500 to 3000 farmers. He runs 700 acres with 165 cattle and 400 hogs while managing a Macomb office with two stenographers and a staff.

Monstrous fish sighted at Lake Senachwine stirs locals

Reports describe a giant fish five to six feet long and 100 to 200 pounds seen several times at Lake Senachwine. Witnesses include Oscar Wright Tub er Dawson and Ned Williams and two Peoria anglers. Local guide Dewey Wright offers a $15 bounty for the monster, often spotted near the Big Springs area by the dance pavilion.

Last Rites Held For Robert R. Dilzer

Funeral services for Robert R. Dilzer were held in Henry and Peoria, with graveside rites at Calvary Cemetery. Born September 19, 1896 in Peoria, he died June 24, 1938 in Peoria after an eight week illness. Survived by wife Mildred Craft, seven children, mother Mary Graver, siblings and many nieces nephews. He worked for Budweiser in Peoria. funeral attendees included relatives from Henry, Peoria and Metamora.

County Chorus Presents Harvest Caravans Cantata

The Marshall and Putnam County Chorus performed Harvest Caravans at Henry Methodist Church directed by Miss Gretchen Schiffbauer. The program drew an attentive audience and plans call for a district reunion in Princeton on August 4 featuring 150 voices and a later massed statewide performance at the State Fair in Springfield on August 19. Dr George A Zeller Dies Peoria State Hospital Leader

Dr George A Zeller longtime Peoria State Hospital superintendent died yesterday in his Bartonville apartment after nearly four decades directing reform in mental health care He born November 1868 in Spring Bay studied at Illinois University then in Europe He led cottage plan color therapy yoga and social activities at the hospital and helped eradicate Pellagra His funeral is Friday at 11 at the hospital auditorium with burial at Springdale Cemetery He is survived by three sisters and one brother.

LaPrairie Suffers Worst Storm In Years

Sparland and western Marshall County faced floods on Saturday as heavy rain caused roads to flood and farms to sustain damage. In LaPrairie Township roads turned to torrents and residents rushed to move to higher ground. Lightning struck a lilac bush near the Collins farm, and 20 starlings were found dead beneath an elm tree the next day.

Henry Recreation Project is Started at High School Playground

The Henry WPA recreation program opened this week at the high school playground under Charles M. Greeley. Local leaders Robert McBride and Norma McVicker, both recent Henry High graduates, head the effort with youth leaders Ted Waterous William Forrest Ardis Bullington Al Fountain Lyle Hall Mary Duke Sally Simpson and Margaret Hunt forming a youth committee. Activities include softball basketball croquet volleyball horseshoes and checkers with plans for twilight softball and horse shoe courts and lighting in Central Park.

Henry area school bands to perform in July 4 celebration

Henry Sparland Putnam LaMoille and Malden school bands directed by Prof and Mrs Arthur Blocher will play afternoon and evening concerts during the four day Henry July 4 celebration. Henry 60 piece band opens Saturday July 2 with a half hour concert. A massed band concert at 430 brings together over two hundred musicians under Blochers. Senachwine Putnam band plays two shows Sunday July 3. Sparland 60 member band performs Monday July 4 at 2 pm and 8 pm with a lively program.

Tiskilwa Approves Hard Road Program

Businessmen and farmers in the Tiskilwa area gathered at the Legion hall to discuss a new system of improved secondary roads linking Tiskilwa Bradford and Henry. About fifty attendees unanimously approved sending a delegation to Springfield with Henry and Bradford to push the plan with the State highway department for early construction.

Saratoga Farmer Tops The Market

Robert Kelley, longtime Saratoga Township supervisor, stockman and farmer, tops the Chicago market with a carload of 26 steers weighing 1267 pounds each. The herd, fattened on his farm, sells at a new seasonal high of 11.40 per cwt and marks a 40 cent per cwt gain from Tuesday and a 2 cent high from last Monday. Paul Kellner and family from Chicago visit Henry to spend the day at Charles Bogner’s cottage on the river.
