The 35 member Ke wanee V. F. W. Accordion Band will perform at the July 4 celebration. The group, well known in the area, is booked to play Sunday afternoon and evening July 6 in observance of the holiday.
Marshall County farmers report a poor planting season with much corn replaced by soybeans. Some oats show progress after late planting while corn and haying occupy most chores. Prices and market pressure affect decisions as Ford County posts meet Henry Memorial Post of the VFW set for Thursday.
A local Boy Scout troop met at Henry High School on Monday evening June 23. Attendees included Hillard E. Parks from Creve Coeur, Emery Baldwin, Lacon Scoutmaster, Mr and Mrs E J Miller, Frank Hageman chair of the Scout committee, John Martin secretary, Hadden Perdew assistant Scoutmaster, and John Moline Scoutmaster. Parks spoke on scouting benefits and plans to engage Henry youths. Nine re registrations were approved and four new entrants joined the troop. Re registered Henry scouts were Kenneth Kenney Charles Johnson Bobby Hurd John Lindgren Donald Hawkins Kendall Griffith Edward Perdew and Michael Nader. New registrations included Denny Britton Dale Tuttle and Herbie Hurt. Ages range from 12 to 18. interested youths should contact Scoutmaster John Moline.
Marshall County sets a Board of Review session at the courthouse in Lacon to equalize property assessments and hear taxpayer complaints. Publications will run lists by townships in Henry Whitefield Saratoga Lacon Steuben LaPrairie Evans Roberts Hopeful Bennington Bell Plain Ichland. members include Judge D M Gregg appointee with prior board led by Roscoe Ball Glen Harper C B Stateler and clerk Ruth Murphy.
Residents of Lostant and Putnam paused for seven minutes as a squadron of heavy bombers and escort fighters roared over their communities on Sunday June 22 for an air show at Peoria. Planes returning to Chicago were seen by Putnam and Henry residents, while Charles Clausen and Bradford Murphy of Cuba visited Clausen family during the weekend.
A 12 45 p m luncheon at the People s Café will feature A N Ekstrand executive secretary of Exposition Gardens speaking to Henry business men about the nine county Peoria area project. The plan includes an exposition building youth facilities and a large community center with educational financial and entertainment benefits.
Bud Keegan son of Mr and Mrs Francis Keegan of Henry has joined Henry Bottling Works owned by Andy Scardon. Scardon runs the plant and Keegan oversees outdoor operations. He is a 1947 Henry High School graduate who previously worked as a clerk at Dale's Market.
Three Jackson brothers Perry 18 Bobbie 11 and Franklin 8 returned to Opportunity Home for Boys at Decatur on June 23 under Marshall County Sheriff Park McAllister after fleeing the home on June 8 and seeking their mother Helen Shea's residence south of Lacon.
Sale dates claimed every Saturday at the Marshall Putnam Fair Grounds in Halsey. Sale manager is Henry Munler and Francis Keegan, with Ben McAllister as clerk.
Mayor Louis F Klein proclaims June 23 to October 18, 1947 as National Traffic Safety Period in Henry Illinois urging all residents and nearby areas to prevent accidents during and after the campaign period. The proclamation bears the city seal dated June 24 1947.
Governor Green endorses a 13 week Illinois newspaper campaign starting June 23 to reduce traffic deaths injuries and property damage. He cites national tolls and urges strict observance of traffic laws during the upcoming Fourth of July period to boost safety efforts by the public and state agencies.
Baylor Riddell son of Mr and Mrs R J Riddell of Sparland Illinois has graduated from the United States Naval Academy Annapolis Md and is assigned to sea duty aboard the tanker Chikaskia serving the Pacific Fleet He will report July 2 at San Pedro California and tour Pacific outposts Hawaii Philippines Guam and Okinawa with plans for a year or more at sea then periods ashore Riddell’s brother Robert J Riddell Jr recently earned a master’s degree in physics at the University of Michigan and will study for his doctorate after summer vacation He was a navy lieutenant junior grade during the war and trained at Princeton and M I T on radar duty
County chorus organizers urge Marshall Putnam residents to attend the July 2 rehearsal at 8 30 pm in the Farm Bureau building. Mrs Frank Clift is temporary chairwoman and Mrs C O Pogemiller secretary with John Boose directing. First public appearance target set for July 30 at the County 4H Show.
The Henry band with reinforcements from Senachwine played a strong program at the band stand in Central Park to a large crowd. Twirlers added flair as the audience enjoyed the unusually good program. Next week's concert is cancelled and the band will perform July 4 with both afternoon and evening shows.
