Malt houses in market for locally grown barley
In Mills River a diverse group of 30 craft brewers farmers and researchers gathered for a barley field day sponsored by NCSU. Brent Manning of Riverbend Malt House urged sourcing barley from local farms highlighting a premium malt market and crop rotation benefits. Farmer Jason Davis noted 12 acres planted last fall with Davis's crop possibly yielding 70 bushels per acre. Dr. David Marshall explained barley’s relative disease resistance in Western North Carolina and the higher maintenance yet higher value malt crop. Davis described the shift from feed to malting quality, promising better prices per bushel for local growers.
