Wingate campus renovation eyed for Hendersonville mill
The Hendersonville City Council backed a Wingate University plan to renovate the 98 year old Grey Hosiery Mill for campus expansion at a 6.7 million cost, with Wingate to pay 451000 annually in rent. Other proposals included 30 loft apartments and a 60 unit artist loft plan with rent subsidies, plus a market event space option. Critics urged delay to better assess traffic and revenue, proposing a festival marketplace on Grove Street and Main Street to attract pedestrians and promote local beer and wine venues along a greenway. The panel split 3-2 in favor of Wingate, signaling cautious approval amid questions about financing and impact.
