Coal ash debate centers on NC lawmakers and Duke Energy
North Carolina state Sen. Tom Apodaca and Rep. Chuck McGrady led a Capitol meeting on coal ash policy with Duke Energy. The proposed bill creates a nine member Coal Ash Management Commission to oversee closures of 33 ponds, including Dan River and Lake Julian sites, and may shift cleanup costs to ratepayers through the Utilities Commission. Opponent Rick Wood warns of costs up to $20 monthly and a new Coal Ash Authority with political appointees.
