John Humphrey, nearing 100, has spent decades conservationist work around his Mills River home. He details battling invasive vines, cataloging trees and vines, bog turtles on his land, and recalling 1916 flood evidence and chestnut stumps marking old boundaries.
John Humphrey born June 24 1916 celebrated his 100th birthday and remains active as a conservationist. He served as a Navy captain during World War II and later worked in instruments marketing in Rochester Philadelphia Chicago before moving to Mills River in 1968. He led conservation efforts including a 180 acre fee easement with Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and served as president of KMLC 1998 2001 2003 2005. He was named Stanback Conservationist of the Year for saving Worlds Edge now part of Chimney Rock State Park. He continues outdoor life and nature study leadership chatting in his den about genes and health.
Mills River Town Council plans to raise the tax rate fourfold to fund a three year contract for enhanced law enforcement. With Henderson County pulling out after talks stalled, the town resumes negotiations to meet state service requirements and avoid noncompliance. Sheriff Charlie McDonald notes comparisons of town spending on law enforcement.
