Washington June 10 The Senate moved toward a verdict on farm relief with debate limited and a bid for a vote by midweek. McNary equalization fee supporters faced dwindling backing as southern Democrats balked and Secretary Mellon refused endorsement.
A severe storm hit eastern Montana from Si Tesia to Joliet on Thursday afternoon, bringing heavy rain and hail. Rockvale reportedly suffered the strongest impact with water a foot deep on roads. Crop damage could not yet be assessed.
London June 10. Fifteen American women were among about 900 guests presented to King George and Queen Mary at the season’s first function. The Buckingham Palace reception featured a lavish display of gowns and jewels. Mrs Alanson Bourhton, wife of the American ambassador, presented to the king and queen, with seven Americans in the diplomatic circle and eight in the general circle. Lisbon, Portugal. An official decree dissolving the Portuguese parliament was gazetted.
Berlin June 10 AP The Reichstag roared as President Von Hindenburg’s letter on confiscating former rulers’ property drew socialist fury. They condemned the move as breaking neutrality and justice, arguing it violates nonpartisan duties while opposing a special court to hear the case.
Washington June 10 A Senate campaign investigating committee hearing charged wholesale corruption in the Pennsylvania Republican primary. GC McGovern Western manager for Governor Pinchot claimed 20 000 votes were counted for others and 35 350 watchers paid to influence ballots in Allegheny County. He alleged purchase of votes with pay of 10 dollars per watcher, totaling nearly 495 000 dollars. Pepper and Ware were named in the three cornered race. Pepper testified about personal expenses but denied knowledge of the Allegheny county operations. Continued on page three.
Yankee Stadium New York June 10 Paul Berlenbach retained the world heavyweight title by outpointing W L Young Stribling in a 15 round bout watched by about 56000. The match was rough and tactical with many grapples and a one sided edge for Berlenbach. Stribling celebrated by leaving the ring in disbelief while his wife fought illness back at the hotel.
Missoula report notes a faculty member, likely Mr White, may resign in summer quarter. President Clapp holds the resignation in hand pending action by the postal department, with Horace J. involved in related telegrams. Continued on page.
San Diego authorities and police probed the death of Francis Milton Bloom, 18, a naval apprentice. His nude body was found in a hotel room and investigators weighed whether the death was self inflicted or a murder.
Lewistown June 10 In the retrial of Michael Riser charged with the murder of traffic officer Frank Draper the state rests after widow Mrs Draper testified she learned from her husband of a close exchange of shots when officers forced entry to the Miser apartment. Charles Coleman testified that Prohibition officer Kohler said it was impossible to tell who fired first. Medical testimony noted Draper’s abdomen wound would cause an immediate knockdown. Riser was shot through the shoulder. Readings of Mrs Riser’s earlier testimony continued. she died soon after the first trial and much time was spent reviewing it. The case nears closing as testimony is expected to finish tomorrow.
Milwaukee delegates at the National Knitted Outerwear association convention hear D. F. Byrnes say public demand drives producers to craft bathing suits with minimal material to satisfy censors. He notes yearly shifts as designs echo fashion icons and trigger questions about future trends.
Rome June 1944 government orders end of focal news agencies operating Rome and elsewhere on a commercial basis. Only two or three agencies with proven integrity and finances will be allowed to continue.
Des Moines June talk centers on a post primary meeting of the Republican state central committee set for Saturday. The group will draft a platform for the November voters and likely review Brookhart’s role as party leader amid past disputes. Colonel Brookhart heads to Washington to observe farm relief debates as supporters seek farm-relief measures. Claude Porter, Democratic senatorial nominee, has made no public comment since his nomination.
The U S state department urged the American consul at Mazatlan to investigate the reported murder of American citizen Richard Dawson in Los Mochis Mexico. Rep. Thomas of Oklahoma pressed the action after being informed of Dawson's father living in Chickasha Oklahoma.
Washington June 10 Chief Justice Taft continues to recover from illness and is described as feeling fine. On advice of heart specialists his planned departure to his summer home in Canada is postponed until next week.
A mine blast at an Alabama Hy-Products facility in Majeatic, 23 miles from Birmingham, killed four workers this morning. The explosion occurred in a worked-out entrance of the mine, and authorities from Birmingham report the fatalities.
Damascus June 20. The trial of Bennett J. Doty of Memphis for desertion from the French foreign legion in Syria, using the name Gilbert Clare, has been set for June 16. French authorities report hundreds of clemency messages from the United States.
Telegram from Brazil confirms resignation from the League of Nations non permanent seat and notes later communication of the full decision. Spain’s envoy announces refusal to accept secondary power status, creating confusion over their intent to quit the league.
A large fire in forest district No 1 near Avery Idaho drove flames and forced 45 firefighters to retreat for hours as the blaze spread over 101 acres aided by high winds. Simultaneous fires in Pend Doreville and other western states fueled firefighting efforts across multiple forests with hundreds of men deployed.
The annual convention of the Christian Endeavor Societies of Montana opened in Billings this evening. About 200 delegates are expected, including some from Wyoming, with Dr. Ira Tandrith of Boston, the national secretary, in attendance.
Washington June 10 The House Judiciary Committee refused to approve Britten's resolution to bar state and local police from serving as federal agents under Prohibition. The move counters a Coolidge order and follows a mood among temperance groups calling for nonbinding referenda to be avoided. The panel sent the measure back to Chairman Graham with a decisive vote against it.
Ed Rollins admitted slaying 73 year old prospector Bob Neill. Body found in a shaft near Anaconda. He confessed to luring Neill to Deer Lodge, bludgeoning him, dragging the body to a 60 foot shaft, and disposing it. Sentencing set for June 14 in District Court before Judge Winston.
Charles F. Barr, a Norfolk and Western passenger conductor from Bluefield, was seized from a train at Crumpler in McDowell County by a band of masked men and badly beaten. Authorities have not determined a motive and search for suspects continues.
Baltimore June 10 AP Richard Reene Whittemore a Maryland penitentiary escapee and alleged leader of a one million dollar crime trust was sentenced to death. He killed Robert M. Hottman during the February 1926 escape. Execution date will be deferred automatically by an appeal announced by Whittemore and counsel Edgar Allan Poe.
