Two Convicts Go Missing From Alcatraz Island Penitentiary
San Francisco December 16 Two desperates convicts vanished today from Alcatraz Island federal penitentiary as guards probed caves and crevices. Warden James A Johnston said escape by swimming to the mainland a mile and a quarter away was unlikely though coast guard ships swept fog with searchlights. The missing men are Ralph Tas 29 Duncan Oklahoma serving 5 years for bank robbery and Theodore Cole 23 Stroud Ohio serving 50 years for kidnapping. No escapes from Alcatraz since 1934 when it became federal.
