County Teachers Hold Final Meeting Of Year

The Robertson County State Teachers Association met May 16 at Hearne High School to view A Teacher Is Forever and install new officers effective June 1 Leon Jackson president Nancy Lowery president elect Thomas Rector Jr treasurer Berry Whiteside secretary Installation conducted by Margaret Janson TSTA Austin President Lillian Sadberry reported year end accomplishments A future scholarship fund was approved for one local high school senior and retiring teachers Martha Thornton Lucy Jane Anchicks and Mildred Porter received pins for long service

C C Meeting Well Attended at Planters and Merchants Bank

Eleven directors attended the Chamber of Commerce meeting at the Planters and Merchants State Bank at 7 30 p m Thursday May 19 President O Archer Hoyt Jr presided Two committees were elected with Ed Gregorek chairing the membership committee and J C Killingsworth heading the industrial committee A proposal to update the Hearne Facts Book for potential new industry was raised A wide discussion covered the chamber office registration of vehicles and the need to present facts to the county tax assessor collector to secure more funding Directors plan to form a civic committee and possibly a woman s auxiliary to assist the chamber directors

Robertson County Gets County District Attorney Proposal

Senate Bill 281 would create a criminal district attorney office in Robertson County to share duties with the county attorney. State funding would cover most costs and set compensation to at least a regular district attorney level, with salaries to be finalized by the House Senate conference committee on appropriations.

City Announces Summer Pool Opens in Hearne

Mayor Guy Chandler announces Hearne East Side and North Side pools opening Monday May 28 as part of the City Summer Program under Coach Bob Davis. Pools operate 2 to 7 pm Tue Sat and 2 to 6 pm Sun, closed Mondays. lessons 8:30 am Tue-Fri. tennis 9 to 11 am. gymnastics 2 to 4 pm Mon Wed Fri. Season tickets available at City Hall.

Kindergarten Meeting Set for Franklin Next Year

A meeting is planned Monday May 30 at 5 30 p m for all kindergarten children and their parents in Franklin. Principal Tom Cole asks parents to bring vaccination records. He will discuss immunizations required before school starts. The session will be in the kindergarten building.

One Car Accident Near Hearne on Highway 190

A lone-vehicle crash occurred May 22 at 2 30 p m seven miles south of Hearne on Highway 190. Milton Edwards of Dallas ran off the road causing minor vehicle damage. No injuries and no citations were issued. The Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the incident last week.

Hearne Council Names McGrew City Manager in unanimous vote

The Hearne City Council unanimously appointed James W. McGrew as city manager, effective June 1, replacing A. K. Steinheimer who resigns after 15 months. McGrew will also serve as executive director of the Hearne Development Agency, with a $12,500 annual salary.

Hearne High School Future Homemakers of America held its first meeting with newly elected officers on Thursday May 19. Officers listed: Cathy Gibson president Sabrina Moss Dorothy Accurso Helen Wilson Sherriel Sidom vice presidents Towanda Polk historian reporter Linda Dairy treasurer Margaret Sifuentes secretary Ella Dickson parliamentarian chaplain Amy Shear song leader. They will attend the leadership conference in Trinidad June 6-8 and will participate in workshop swimming and baseball activities.

Texas Veterans Free Education Benefit Explained

Robertson County veterans service officer L. L. Perkins notes wartime veterans may attend state supported universities and junior colleges without tuition under Hazlewood Act. The benefit applies after GI Bill use or entitlement expiry and is codified in Chapter 54 of the Texas Education Code. Perkins can provide more details at his Franklin office.

Immunizations Schedule Aide Across Two Locations

The Department of Health sponsors immunizations on Wednesday June 1 from 10 a m to 12 noon at the office and 1 p m to 2 p m at the ECAC Community Center Calvert. Free vaccines protect against measles polio diphtheria tetanus whooping cough and German measles for children. Adults should receive booster shots for diphtheria and tetanus every 10 years due to severe adult risks including tetanus.

Poppy Sale Planned by Hearne VFW Post Friday and Saturday

The Hearne VFW Post will sell poppies on Friday and Saturday May 27 and 28 in Hearne Calvert and Franklin. Volunteers meet outside Hoyt's Pharmacy at 9 a.m. each day to plan routes.

Arrest Three Men In Calvert Calvert

Calvert town marshal Tom my Singleton reports three men were arrested at a Calvert residence for fighting Saturday night. Also two weekend breakins were solved with the detention of four juveniles, two of whom were released when it was determined they had nothing to do with the crimes. The break ins were at the City Garage Sunday and at the Calvert School sometime during the weekend. The school incident was discovered Monday morning. At the garage minor change and items were taken and at the school the children were after soda water according to Marshal Singleton. Involved in the investigation were Singleton, his assistant Sim Mickens, and Deputy Sheriff James Kellum. Mickens was involved in the administration of rabies shots to 100 dogs May 19-20 in a city program to get the animals vaccinated.

Hearne High Graduation Slated On Friday Night

Hearne High School announced the 1977 graduating class led by principal Leon Jackson. Ceremonies will be held at Wood Field at 8 p.m. Friday with a long list of named graduates among the boys and girls.
