Exxon Station Robbery on Market Street Nets $404

Gil's Exxon Service Station on Market Street was robbed at 5 45 a m Saturday May 28 of 404 43 by two armed Black men. The victim Lewis Hyman reported a knife to his throat and a .22 pistol as the drawers were opened. They gagged him tied him to a chair and fled in an Oldsmobile after the cashier handed over the cash. A third suspect waited in the Planters and Merchants State Bank lot and a juvenile was later taken into custody. Police recovered no money.

Mental Health Drive Raises $261 in Hearne May Bellringer

Hearne residents contributed 261 dollars to the Mental Health Association during the May bellringer drive led by Mrs. Luke Roffino and her team of workers including Bernadine Morgan Theresa Jones Michelle Jones Tena Porter Mary Ann Swick Amy Shear Eva Meier Marie Sifuentes and Suzanne Hopcus.

Vacation Bible School Set by Five Area Churches

Five area churches plan Vacation Bible School from June 6 to 10 with Bethany Calvary Church of Christ Elliott Baptist and First Baptist hosting. A police escorted parade through Hearne downtown on June 4 will show dates and times. First Baptist School runs 9 to 11:30 a.m. with Friday night commencement at 7.

Open Installation For Eastern Star Officers

An open installation will be held at eight oclock Saturday night June 4 in Golden Rule Masonic Lodge for the Hearne Eastern Star unit new officers. Swim Lessons Begin Tuesday As Part Of Summer Program

Swimming lessons under the Summer Recreation Program start at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, at the East Side Pool with season tickets available at City Hall. Tennis begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday on the Bob Jones Park courts, with sessions at 2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Gymnastics launches Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the High School gym, with Thursday and Friday sessions at 2 p.m.

Fiddlers Festival Set For Crockett

The 41st World Champion Fiddlers Festival will be held Friday at Davy Crockett Memorial Park in Crockett. Registration starts 8:30 a.m., competition at 10 a.m. Four age eliminating classes and an amateur under 13 precede the champion and trophy awards. Last year’s winner, 21-year-old Terry Morris of Decatur, returns to defend his title.

Hearne School Boards appoint Williams as tax assessor

The Hearne School Board, in executive session May 23, named Johnny Williams II as city school tax assessor collector, effective June Williams was Urban Renewal Agency relocation and rehabilitation officer and ex assistant executive director of Hearne Development Agency Williams, 36, a Bryan native with a business degree, real estate license, and Hearne Chamber of Commerce member, will work from City Hall with separate salary arrangements and independent records for each unit.

Lions Award To Steve Bishop

The Hearne Lions Club presented its annual $500 scholarship to Steve Bishop during the awards program. The club thanks Leon Jackson and Mrs Katherine Lockhart for supplying names of students and thanks Hearne citizens for supporting projects that fund the scholarship each year.

Six Accidents Reported By Highway Patrolman

Department of Safety patrolman Gary Henderson reported six accidents investigated last week. Three arrests for marijuana possession, one for DWI and another for both DWI and dangerous drugs. Incidents included a Bremond collision on Highway 14 with no injuries, a New Baden area single-vehicle off-road, a Milam County truck crash near Hearne with minor injuries, a Franklin curb collision at Fair Dry Goods, and a Calvert police car and dirt bike crash injuring two children with ongoing investigation into the driver.

Promotion Exercises Held For Eighth and Ninth Grades

Hearne Junior High staged ceremonies for both eighth and ninth graders as the ninth grade moves to the high school next year. Eighth graders were honored Friday with a 10:30 a.m. program in the auditorium, featuring a welcome, a prayer, choir music, a skit, and presentations by Max Grenwelge and Michaelyn Emmons. Seventeen names appear for perfect attendance and many earned 90 average or higher. The ninth grade celebration followed at 8:30 p.m. with a piano processional, a welcome, a prayer, a choir performance, and a play titled The Gong Gang, with a long cast list and certificates awarded by board secretary Mrs. Bryan Russ.
