Local Happenings From Franklin

Mrs J G Lyles notes visitors from Austin Corpus Christi and Houston visiting Franklin residents this week. Ray Terrell Griffin weekend visits to Alvin and Mineral Wells friends. Mrs Leessames returned from Fort Worth with extended visit. Maggie Mauk returned to Littlefield after stay with Ernest Calhoun family.

Weekend Visitors Highlight Area Social Roundup

Visiting over the weekend with his mother Mrs Joe Turner were Mr and Mrs Johnny Turner of Groves and on Sunday Mr and Mrs Joe Turner Jr and Cindy of Hearne were her guests. Also guests were Mrs 5S WM Peters and Mrs Joe Price of Port Arthur with Mrs Lee Wilder. Mr and Mrs T W Shipper and son Mike of Bryan visited Mr and Mrs John Rutherford. Mrs Rutherford accompanied them home for a few days. Mrs Ben L Parten and son Ben Parten Jr visited Calvert with Mrs Berkley Jones. Parten Jr and son Matt spent the weekend in Corpus Christi visiting her father Minor James. Mrs Lucy Schrock Temple, Mrs L L Armor Sweetwater, and Mrs Wilson Fox Temple visited Mrs C E Maris last week. Henry Wilkins Ankeny Iowa visited with brothers Travis and Jack and mother Mrs Ernest Calhoun and Mr Calhoun. Mrs Maggie Muauk Littlefield is extended visiting with her daughter Mrs Ernest Calhoun. Mr and Mrs Frank James New Baden, Mr and Mrs Frank Brunette and sons, Mrs Louise Brunette, and Mrs Walter Hanna Easterly visited Mrs Littlefield Sunday. Milton Smith, long hospitalized at Hearne General Hospital, is able to be at home.

Covered Luncheon For Sewing Club

G Lytes hosted a covered dish luncheon at Mrs. Robert McLeod's Franklin home on Thursday March 3 for the Henry Prairie Sewing Club ladies. The day featured quilting for the Orphans Home, with two quilts finished and a noon meal enjoyed by M K Smith Erma Smith Mae Smith M D Carleton L Moore Kirby Tuttle Curry Tullous Calvin Petty Frank Zert Westie Steepleton Grace Morgan and guest Nannie O'Rear of Franklin.

Franklin 4 H and FFA Members Exhibit at Fat Stock Show

Franklin High School 4-H and FFA members showed commercial steer calves at the Houston Fat Stock Show. Participants included Sue Reagan, Mary Margaret Mitchell, Tina Stegall, John Vernon Stegall, Wiley Glen Grace, Buster Scasta, Nicky Nickelson, and Dick Maris with 4-H or FFA affiliations. Calves fetched about 26 cents per pound, with total prize money of 580.80. Buster Scasta earned recognition in the record keeping contest. Advisors were E. B. Bounds and Harry Smith. others accompanying the group included several adults. Franklin Chamber of Commerce funded transportation and the FFA chapter attended FFA Day March 5.

All Day WMU Meeting at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church

Mrs J Gayles reports the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church WMU held an all day event with a covered dish luncheon at Mrs Ernest Calhoun's home to observe Annie Armstrong Week of Prayer. Devotional and prayer opened and closed the study with participants including Mrs Will Templeton Mrs Nugent Blair Mrs Adolf Nieman Mrs Frances Griffin Mrs Barbara Threadgill Mrs J Q Jones and Mrs Ernest Calhoun. Guests included Mrs Maggie Mauk and Mrs Jack Wilkins.

Mrs J G Philen Returns Home From Wintering Abroad

Mrs J G Philen arrived back in Hearne on Friday after spending the winter months in Brownsville. She traveled by train and is reported in good health and eager to resume daily routines in her longtime residence.
