Franklin residents report a busy social scene with guests visiting from Caldwell Hearne Bryan Pasadena Houston and Fairfield. Notable events include a 79th birthday dinner for Mrs W L Ingram hosted by Mrs D M Davis and Mrs Marvin Baxter with Pope Ingram and William Paul of Houston joining.
A list of candidates announced for Mayer elections seeks five aldermen and two school board seats. The aldermen candidates include Chandler Degelia Doherty Ferrara Gallagher Griffin Payne Perrone Pharis Plagens Werner. The two school board nominees are Reistino Roberts Wilson.
A passenger describes an elegant older couple en route to Rio de Janeiro with a wealthy husband and a beautiful younger wife. The wife talks much, the husband is quiet, and the teller notes questions about motive, wealth, and marriage patterns observed during the Braniff flight.
The Woman's Reading Club of Franklin met on Friday afternoon March 5 at Mrs. Johnie Stegall's home with co hosts Mrs. T. P. Metcalfe and Mrs. Howard Stegall. Guest speaker was Helen Baldwin Waco News Tribune society editor who spoke of her Johnsons era and shared White House impressions.
Attendees at the Hearne Chamber of Commerce Banquet on March 2 included Mr. and Mrs. Jud Collier Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Foyt Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Otten Jr. Matt Salvaggio of Mumford and Sam Rice Jr. of Benchley. The guest speaker was Attorney General Waggoner Carr.
W. O. Banks, after more than a year as a patient in a Palestine nursing home, has relocated to Calvert Lodge.
James Calhoun turned 11 on March 6 with a party hosted by Mrs. Joe Mitchell and Mrs. James Calhoun. Outdoor baseball games entertained little friends including Sammy Morris and Gendale Merryman, with gifts for James and refreshments of sandwiches, potato chips, cake and punch.
Mrs. Billy Bush hosted a family gathering at their home on Thursday night March 4 to mark Billy Bush the boy’s sixth birthday. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Box Mrs. Stewart Bush and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Box plus Bobby and Karen.
Roger Crowder Jr. of Austin arrived by bus Friday for a weekend visit with grandparents Mrs Daisy Richards and Mr and Mrs Cameron Crowder and other Hearne relatives. His parents and brother Mr and Mrs Roger Crowder and Mark joined him late Saturday afternoon and the family returned to Austin together on Sunday.
Pvt. Michael L. Jones twenty year old son of Mr and Mrs Cecil L. Jones of Hearne completed a 12 week radio relay and carrier relay course at the Army Southeastern Signal School Fort Gordon Ga on March 5 He ranked in the top ten percent of his class Jones was trained to operate and maintain field radio relay carriers and other communications gear He entered the Army in September 1964 and after basic at Fort Polk La was a 1962 Hearne High School graduate and attended Sam Houston State Teachers College before service He is married to Regina Chariton of Thorne and they reside near Fort Gordon
Elaine Gallagher notes the cold night did not stop Bremond Cen-Tex First Annual Point Horse Show from success. Hearne Saddle Club tied with McClennan for most uniforms in the grand entry and a plaque was awarded. HSC Sweetheart Rita Cook was honored. A horse sale is set for Saturday March 13 at 1 p.m. at the Calvert Commission Barn on Highway 6. Members urged to sell Longhorn Cutting Saddle tickets at Hearne Auto Supply.
Localites attending the Texas Exes Association meeting at the Triangle Restaurant in Bryan Tuesday night included Mr and Mrs C B Thames and Mr and Mrs Wilbur Strong. Thames, secretary treasurer the past year, will be vice president for the new year. Main speaker Clifton C Carter, Executive Director of the National Democratic Committee, spoke on Excellence in Education.
The Hearne Senior 4 H Club met at 7 30 p m in the home of Mr and Mrs L A White. Vice president Charles Corona called the meeting to order. Benny Accurso gave the inspiration Mary Lou Sisson led the motto pledge and prayer. The secretary read minutes and the financial report. Mr White gave a program on Nuclear Fallout refreshments by Cathy Bingham and James Baker.
Calvert residents hosted and visited family and friends from Monroe City to Houston, Corpus Christi, and Saudi Arabia. The Lion's Club plans a March 16 light bulb sale for a community project, while library updates and school trustee elections are noted amid church activities and public school week outreach.
Mrs Wanda Lee reports Ira Denman passed away in Rockdale hospital early Monday. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p m from Phillips Luckey Chapel in Rockdale.
