The Alamo Survivor Tales and the Legend
In 1836 the Alamo siege produced many conflicting reports and legends. Survivors including Mrs Dickinson and enslaved servants Joe Sam and Ben offered accounts, while others claimed heroes arose from misremembered deeds. The piece argues the era’s myths elevated Travis Bowie and Crockett, not the civilian couriers and Gonzales defenders who did the real saving work.
