Hearne patrol officers logged several crash investigations from June 5 to June 11 on highways 6 and 79. Notable incidents include two Carla Hicks and Carlos Miles, both from Killeen, arrested on auto theft charges after a June 10 rollover near Marquez. occupants Kath leen Karba la and Kay Marie Swenson sustained injuries. A June 11 jackknife crash south of Franklin injured Larry E Coomer. at least one telephone outage occurred. Earlier, June 5 crashes near Hearne and Calvert involved Ed Carter and Emma Tubbs with no injuries, plus a hayload fire near Calvert. Reginald L Pitts of Coushatta, La, charged with DUI after a June 6 crash on 79 north of Franklin.

Three Men Honored By Veterans Friday Night
Veterans of Foreign Wars members and the public honored Dr. James P. Fleming Jr., G. T. Vickers, and W. D. Pringle at a Friday night barbecue in the Community Center. Fleming was cited for helping veterans access Veterans Hospitals and for his service as a captain in the 105 Engineers, 30th Infantry, with five battle stars. Vickers, organizer of the local VFW Post, was named immediate post commander, with Sawyer succeeding him. Pringle, a World War I veteran and post service officer, presented Fleming’s citation and spoke of Fleming’s lifelong dedication to veterans. Jack Stem praised auxiliary volunteers and discussed hospital use and admission priorities. The post has 64 members in three years. the auxiliary has 48.

Summer Nutrition Program For Youth At Hearne Center
The Expanded Nutrition Program runs a free week long activity at Hearne Community Center 809 Davis Street for youths ages nine to nineteen from 9 a.m. to 12 noon Monday through Friday during the week of June 20. A small daily fee covers insurance. Volunteer leaders include Mrs Rose Johnson and Mrs Judy Chamberlain along with several extension staff. Participants should arrive June 20 at 9 a.m. For questions contact Mrs Chamberlain in Franklin at 828 4722. The program is part of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and the A M University system.
