Haywardite Air Medal Recipient Heads North to War
Richard T. Headrick 30 son of Mr and Mrs L B E Headrick of Hayward earned the Air Medal as a ball turret gunner on an Eighth Air Force B 17 Flying Fortress. He enlisted a year and a half ago and trained at Las Vegas and Alexandria. Headrick writes home of bicycle tours in England and reports pedaling 80 miles on one trip. Married to Dean Brownell he has two children Dana Jean and Richard Allen and formerly worked for Pacific Bridge in Alameda. His brother John P Headrick 22 has been in England a year and is attached to the Army Medical Corps.

Parachute Rescue After Plane Burns At Hayward Base
Second Lieutenant William R. Maddox parachuted to safety when his P-38 crashed in flames at Hayward Army Air Base during a routine flight. He landed uninjured several hundred yards from the wreck. Chico Army Field and Hayward Acres fire crews fought the blaze as authorities announced an investigation next week to determine the cause of the crash.

Hayward highway patrol investigated a sedan wreck east of Pleasanton on the Pleasanton-Livermore highway. The vehicle, found across from the Henry Kaiser gravel pit, carried Roy McAllister of Oakland, a Camp Shoemaker sailor. Oakland Man Faces Charge of Hit-Run
Byron Stone of Oakland was held to answer hit and run charges after a preliminary hearing in Center ville Justice court. Stone had pleaded not guilty two weeks earlier for a crash on August 16 that left 14 year old Clarence Yeague injured on the Centerville Alameda highway. Yeague remained in Highland hospital with head injuries.

The August police report shows 27 parking citations issued.
