Navy Band to Headline Street Carnival in Hayward Drive

The Book Up Bataan carnival set for Saturday night October 28 aims to push the Hayward Area War Chest over the top. Main Street will close for a dancing strip with a Camp Perry or Shoemaker band, fortune telling, darts, auctions, and prize booths run by local service clubs and civic groups. Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, BPW, and Rotary committees join in, with merchandise prizes and garden produce donated to the chest. San Lorenzo district reports over 100 percent of its goal, energizing volunteers and new residents in the drive.

Police Seek Hit Run Driver After Fatality

Police seek a driver after a hit and run on Highway 40 early this morning killed a person identified as Chiles F. Lovera USN at Band Cantor Streets. Lovera was picked up by ambulances to Ste mater Hospital with a shoulder injury. description notes a green Chevrolet sedan 1988 or 1984 driven by a galley with sailors aboard. He was on the right side of B Street Howard II Way 10 when the incident occurred.

Grants 2 Permits For Bay Area Bus Lines

The State Rally and Commission approved two new bus lines in the South San Francisco and San Bruno region. Swo men Nay Withers and Andrew Byrd won permission to operate a route from San Bruno to the San Francisco airport and nearby points. Pacific Greyhound lines received a related permit order.

Plane Crash Sparks 1500 Acre Grass Fire Near San Diego

A grass fire of about 1500 acres was touched off near the center of San Diego County when an Army airplane crashed. The fire, under control this morning, was reported by the Division of Forestry which said it may need to be patrolled for two to three days to prevent further spread.

Navy Mothers consider housing bureau for Hayward

Navy mothers of Hayward are weighing takeover of the housing bureau. Mrs Edward Humann, chairman, said a Navy Mothers committee met in the mayor’s office with Councilman Arthur Manter to discuss reorganizing the bureau under their auspices. No definite plans yet, several possibilities under study as Hayward has gone ten days without a housing agency.

Seabees Invite Public To Navy Day Open House

Camp Parkes will observe Navy Day on Friday October 27 with open houses from 10 am to 3 pm. Tours will be conducted so the public can see a Seabee camp in operation and meet stationed personnel and their families. The camp houses about 20 000 Naval officers and Seabees with facilities including administration buildings barracks hospital recreation centers movie houses bowling alleys pools chapels libraries and athletic fields. The Seabees who built bases in the Pacific and fought in the Aleutians share how they supported Allied invasions from France to the Philippines.

Seaman Apprehended In Stolen Auto

Seaman 2/e Willer Gearman was held in Hayward jail today for investigation after sheriffs captured him this morning driving a car registered to Harley Carothers on Victory Drive. Carothers said he left his keys in the car and parked it at John Tuesday. tools valued at $75 were found in the trunk.

Ewing Appears at Court in Wheelchair Today

Grant L. Ewing, a bribery trial witness, appeared in Superior Court in a wheelchair delaying cross examination. He was once partner in Nelson and Ewing, linked to a $5000 bribe claim in state contract allotments. Nelson pleaded guilty to offering a bribe. Ewing has immunity from a state senate investigation.

Reckless Driver Pays $25 Fine This Morning

Lese lie Dean Crawford paid a $25 fine after Judge Harder altered hit and run charges to reckless defying. Crawford had already paid $140 for Mrs. Lillie Petersons car damages and returned to the crash scene with the vehicle 15 minutes after the incident on Oct. 16 near Sixth St. District Attorney Sche nne supported the change as restitution was made.

Girls Granted Delay in Weir Plea to November 8

Parry Pleads Guilty Of Grand Theft

William Farry pleaded guilty to grand theft before a judge this morning and was remanded to superior court for sentencing. Farry was arrested in Lovelock, Nevada, two weeks earlier and brought to Hayward to stand trial on charges of stealing a war belonging. Judge Reserves Decision In Plaster Case

Three witnesses for Maceo Construction testified that damages to Pratt Flier Mortuary were not caused by blasting in the area. The case Catherine Flier vs. Maceo Construction began last September.
