United Press brief reports a post office robbery last night with the safe blown and $35 in government aid and other funds stolen. Also notes a 17,000 mile Pacific telephone link between California and Australia with high long distance rates.
Coroners jury in Oakland cleared Chester Bell Nash of responsibility in the death of Howard Costar in a October 16 collision near the Alabama Inn north of Hayward. The verdict cited accidental striking and noted Costar suffered cerebral hemorrhage from chest injuries. Aileen Hoxiles, injured companion, also survived.
Mrs Willa Hellwig of Alvarado was elected forth grand matron of the California lodge Order of the Eastern Star in Oakland and will be installed tonight. Members from Hayward attended the sessions of the 57th annual convention in Oaklawn.
Bishop Parsons announces Trinity Episcopal church may choose Rev Theodore Bell of San Luis Obispo as vicar to succeed Rev Joseph A Ten Breech of Flagstaff Arizona. The event follows a dinner where Lambeth conference highlights, archbishop canterbury, and King George were discussed.
Br Monroe Whetstone was elected commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post at the annual meeting held in the Justice courtroom. The sole nominee succeeds Bert Thompson. other officers include Nelson senior vice commander Morton Wheeler junior vice commander Robert Pomeroy quartermaster Peter Alameda chaplain Anton Ramos officer of the day A J La Cunha judge advocate and Charities Postal trustee. The post unveiled a maroon banner with yellow cans and plans to participate in the Armistice Day parade. Commander Cole of VFW post No 999 Oakland attended, inviting Harvard men to a banquet Nov 11 at the Oakland Veterans memorial building. other guests included two state officers and W B Giles commander of United Spanish War Veterans post No 1917 Oakland. The new officers will be visited Nov 13.
Collins Gens, local fruit and staple juice merchant, will host a "real party" for the Twenty-Third club on the second Thursday in November. He confirmed plans at the club meeting on Thursday night and expects many guests with special entertainment. Last night Howard Trish spoke about deer on a trip to Plumas County, and Bart Russell, Rinaldo Reid, and Clarence Cummings each knocked over a deer within 100 yards of camp. The quartet traveled 600 miles in five days. The club will meet with Vallejo club in that city next Thursday night.
Richard C. Kennedy of Hayward was reelected president of the Alameda County Farm Bureau at the annual directors’ meeting in Livermore. Thomas W. Cordry was reelected secretary, E. O. Donnall became vice president, and Walter Block joined as state director. Directors at large include John Buses, Henry Boehm, Carl Zwissig, John McGlinchey, Joseph Thiele, Mrs. C. F. Bailiff, and Charles F. Long Jr.
State lion hunter Jay C. Bruce adds 37 lions to his career total bringing his tally to 388 as he returns from a strenuous El Dorado county trip with a captured lioness and her kitten. He plans to pursue three more lions observed on the tracks and accompanying naturalist Homer Snow took photos while a related motion picture project nears completion. Bruce marks 12 years of continuous service starting January 1, 1919.
Princeton Missouri reports a 90 year old apple tree owned by Thomas Andrews bore its annual crop this year. The news notes the venerable tree continues to yield fruit despite its age.
The Organization of the Garage and Property Owners association of Southern Alameda County began with 13 auto mobile garage and accessory men meeting at the Villa Grill. Officers named include William Wallace president J P Roza vice president B A Swanson secretary Louis A Cole treasurer and several directors. The group plans to standardize trade methods curb price cutting extend credit ratings and track batteries and other property. Members represented Hayward and nearby districts with many garages and shops listed among attendees and prospective members.

Nashville Indiana reports Mrs. Mary Ann Stull Brown County's oldest woman baked some of the pies served at her 100th birthday anniversary dinner. She reached a century while living in Brown County and celebrated with family and neighbors.
In Rio de Janeiro thousands surged into the capital as a revolutionary committee took charge after President Washington Luis was arrested. The regime fell after federal forces defected. Luis resigned under ultimatum as Juare Tavora arrived to head a provisional government. Authorities began arrests of deposed officials amid celebrations and red flags.
Plans for a two badge merit exposition cover handicraft displays from southern Alameda County Scouts. About 19 booths expected at Luther Burbank school this winter with exhibits from Bay Scouts. A planning committee includes Brown Rose Perry Overpack Zuege Hopkins. Also on deck are talks by Gunnar Berg in Oakland and a training school at Dimond camp.
Alameda County Development commission officers call a county wide meeting in Oakland on November 6 to organize an agricultural and horticultural display for the California State Fair in Sacramento next August. Leading farmers and civic representatives from across the county will attend, with Paul Goldsmith presiding.
Illinois coal mines reported 42,515 workers and 3,982,881 tons produced in September under the state Mines and Minerals Department. A total of 152 mines were in operation.
