Evidence aimed at clearing Warren K. Billings and Thomas J. Mooney includes photographs said to show Mooney was not at the bombing site. Edgar V. McKenzie submitted the photos today as part of the defense. The report also covers a separate sharp rise in crime and disaster items across the period.
Plans for purchasing a fire truck will be discussed at a Mount Eden Improvement Club meeting next Wednesday October 29. The proposed district would cover Tennyson Russell City unset and Mount Eden. Officers include J H Noia president J A Rasmussen vice president and H Mitchell secretary treasurer. By laws and a constitution will be drawn up and winter laws enacted.
Dr. Robert Gordon Sproul, 29, was inaugurated as president of the University of California at Hearst Greek theatre with California leaders and delegates from over 109 colleges attending. He pledged an aggressive administration and emphasized the junior college role in expanding post high school education. He was born in San Francisco and educated at UC, later earning degrees from Occidental College and USC. Roger Burke, 23, a recent groom, died of heart disease and influenza in San Francisco, with services noting his Modesto bride Pauline Hanshaw and a wedding rice-strewn funeral car.
Miss Har Ter G Eddy spoke to the P. E. O. Sisterhood in Hayward about her three year journey through European Russia. She noted scarce money with wages paid in tickets for services, Soviet emphasis on books, and expeditious five year plans. Eddy highlighted cooperation in farming and a month of paid vacation for workers with access to resorts.
In Grapevine Canyon Death Valley Scotty leads about 80 men tearing down chimneys and rebuilding them. He plans a $2,000,000 castle with lakes and gardens, while he stocks hay for hundreds of mules and ships for a mysterious project.
Lions club finalizes preparations for its minstrel and cabaret show at the Green Shutter hotel. The program begins with a concert by the American Legion band at 8 15 p.m. at the high school auditorium, with a second performance Thursday night. Proceeds benefit the milk fund. thanks given to Mrs Saral B Kelly Miss Bertie Barmer and David Russell. Hayward District Community Chest campaigns toward the half way goal of 11 004 with a target set at 6060 by next week and 7500 by Armistice Day. About 1000 previous subscribers have not contributed this year while local firms and schools join the 19 per cent and 190 per cent clubs as donations come in.
The city health board and Hayward Health Center began a diphtheria immunization program in Hayward ward schools on Wednesday morning. Dr. Paul Holmer is assisted by Estelle M. Compton, executive secretary, and M. J. Turk, a school health nurse.
Two Alameda women were injured in a night auto collision at Meek Land avenue and Llewelling road. Frances W. Cooper 35 of Alameda and Antone Coelho 42 of the Farm Products Sales Co were involved. Jane Berthal 24 of Alameda was also injured. All were treated at Hayward Central Hospital. Traffic Officer Anthony Enos investigated.
The Veterans Alliance uniting American Legion Disabled American Veterans Veterans of Foreign Wars and United Spanish War Veterans was formed at an initial meeting at the Legion ball. Leland Stanford Chapman was elected commander P E Holman adjutant Stephen B Daken senior vice commander. Armistice Day events will be under the Legion but all Alliance affairs thereafter will be for Hayward area only with monthly meetings and posts ratifying actions.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars post will hold its annual officers election at the next meeting in the justice courtroom Thursday night. Dr Monroe Whetstone was nominated for commander to succeed Bert B Thompson.
About 160 civic and business leaders attended the first Hayward Chamber luncheon at Verzic bakery, signaling demand for a unified local commerce body. Speakers urged better ties, local patronage, and expanded city hall facilities, with plans for Nov 18 at Auto Grill banquet room.
Manuel G. Rises of Hayward unanimously elected president of the Alameda County Association of Firemen at its annual session. Other officers named include William Graham, Charles Steinmetz, Thomas Cuff, and Sande. The event featured a first aid demonstration by Scout Troop 4 and a debate over Proposition No. 2 on the November ballot.
