United Press reports Chester Nash of Oakland faces manslaughter charges for the auto collision that killed Howard Costar and badly injured Mrs. Arline Bowles. Police probe contradictory accounts of a party at the Albany roadhouse before the fatal walk home.
An eight block shock from a gas explosion tore through the 11 story Garment Capitol building in Los Angeles injuring about 40 people and causing a million dollars in damage. Police suspect labor strife and follow leads while TNT is considered to have contributed to the blast.
The Alameda County Development Commission calls its October meeting for next Tuesday afternoon under Chairman Paul Goldsmith. The commission sorrowfully notes the death of Senator Edward K. Taylor, a longtime member. Attendees will include delegates from Alameda, Hayward, Niles, Pleasanton, Livermore, Piedmont, Berkeley, and Oakland with Judge Jacob Harder Jr. as the Hayward representative.
Senator Edward K. Strobridge of Hayward, county sealer, serves as vice chairman of the 1930 district Kiwanis convention committee. The Oakland gathering runs November 13 to 15 with Don B. Rice as chairman and about four thousand delegates from California and Nevada expected.
Miss Aileen Bowles aged 19 of Oakland remained alive at Fairmont County Hospital with a fair chance for recovery at noon today. She and Howard Costar 23 of Westwood were hit from behind by a car driven by Chester Bell Nash of Oakland early Thursday at San Lorenzo Junction. Venaera per faDHye.
Dr Nels Clemens on upper Castro street reported four burglars stole two planes and an oil measure from his garage last night. Police chief Louis Silva expects an arrest soon. A separate theft of sails and planes from J Sims on Harder road was reported earlier in the week. A second incident aside, a short change artist was chased from E W Neal’s chorus store after attempting a scam, leaving $5 of his own money.
Gus Vaz, driver for the American creamery, will bring home his bride from Terceira in the Azores after he received U S citizenship papers this week. She cannot sail until Nov 24 and will arrive in Hayward about Christmas. Mrs Vaz is a niece of Hayward attorney F J Lemos.
M. H. Silva of 554 Castro Street reported a daytime break in last night. A burglar entered through an unlatched rear window and stole $35 from his purse.
Lt. Lee Gilmore of South Hayward recalls August 14 storming Pekin during the China relief expedition. He served in two campaigns, carried telegraph lines, and witnessed the imperial city gates fall. Gilmore also fought in the Philippean insurrection, and saw action in Cuba, Hawaii, Panama, and Alaska, including the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
The Golden Jubilee convention of the United Portuguese Estates of California ends tonight in San Leandro with a grand ball at the high school auditorium. State officers delegates and guests attend. Frank Lazarus of San Jose is slated as supreme president. F E Fine of Oakland leads the grand march with Mrs Pine.
A Twenty Thirties club meeting covered roads and road building history led by Air Gutier with remarks from A W Bruner of San Leandro and James Butler, plus a review of last Saturdays football gains and losses. District Governor John Mancini presided at Thursday night’s meeting.
Mrs Iida Tillman of Hayward was severely burned last night when a fall caused her to sit on a hot stove She is under treatment at Fairmont county hospital.
Armistice day parade and celebration plans were reviewed by the American Legion post. Local groups will be invited to participate in the November 11 parade led by veterans. The Armistice Ball is set for November 5 at Garden of Allah. Col Roy Fillonburn Merton Wheeler and William T. Morgan named as K P s for the Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

The Alameda County Association of Firemen holds its final meeting of year one at the Auto Grill banquet room with Fire Chief Manuel G. Riggs hosting and Fire Chief Al Moir congratulated. Committees on fireworks and sirens report. discussion on pension funding and county rural fire truck budget renewals. L. M. Curtis addresses the group as First Aid demonstrations by Four Cor Scouts directed by Dr. J. C. Hanley are featured.
A state highway patrol raid in Hayward led by Cliff Ralph during Capt. L. A. Erke's vacation resulted in 78 arrests and 4 citations for defective lights. Those cited were ordered to appear in justice court after fixes are completed.
More than 500 parents, South Hayward Improvement Club members and visitors attended the John Muir school auditorium dedication. The ceremony, chaired by Mrs. George Hovey, featured music by the Hayward grammar school band and a children’s operetta A Box of Dolls.
Engineers in Berkeley report a 325060 dollar Bayshore highway survey for a Richmond to San Jose route. Findings will be shared at a future meeting as they plan a traffic system to serve the eastern end of the new transbay bridge.
A community dedicates a 40 by 60 foot art room with Philippine mahogany ceiling and oak floor to foster art appreciation among students. Judge Harder Jr. and Principal Reid praise the space while Otto Emerson donates an exhibit of oils watercolors and pastels for two weeks.
