Concessions and entries totals include light gas 85.00 poultry 105.00 pigeon 233.00 rabbit entries 210.50 lumber sale 150.90 programs 233.50 with overall receipts and expenses on file at the Chamber of Commerce.
Harvard Rotary and Twenty Thirty clubs prepare for an inter club 18 hole match at Brookshire Links Sunday. Teams chosen from low gross scorers include Gerrit Van Henry Ed Friedrichs Clem Clements Martin Madison Belton Fleisher NL Moore for Rotarians and Al Frager Dr John Scribner Leland Hawke Penrose Russell J Bounds Christign for Twenty Thirty. Eddie Friedrichs heads partner drawings this week.
Niles reports that Sunnyvale near San Jose is a virtual certainty for a government dirigible base, with backing from San Francisco and San Jose interests. Mayor Fred Drew credits Mrs. James R. Whipple of Niles for helping make the site available, while the chamber plans a $2090 Boy Scouts quota and considers housing inspections and relocation of condemned houses. the October 13 barbecue is canceled.
Thompson meets Freddy Fitzgerald in a main event at Arcadia pavilion on Wednesday night after Thompson recently defeated Jimmy Duffy in Oakland. The card also features Vernon Jackson vs Eddie Graham, plus O'Hara vs Evans Fortune and other preliminaries.
H. A. Barnett of Taft will hold meetings Wednesday Thursday and Friday at Pentecostal mission on C and Watkins streets. Barnett is known in Hayward for preaching in local churches. All are welcome to attend.
Local plumber Earl Brunner told police Wednesday morning his 1925 Studebaker sedan was stolen from Castro Street parking the night before. License 2H-42-18.
Oakland readers learn Hayward led with 61 new car registrations in September, ahead of San Leandro 39 Pittsburg 32 Tracy 34 Redwood City 36 San Mateo 66 and Richmond 69, indicating stronger local business. Ford and Chevrolet dominate the list with 24 and 23 registrations respectively, among eight other makes.
Hayward welcomes about 100 health officers from the League of California Municipalities for a 6:30 p m banquet at the Siasonic hall. Mayor John Lee Wilbur will chair and Dr Fred W Browning will receive special honors. Speakers will be brief, with vaudeville and music arranged by the Chamber of Commerce and decorated by the Business and Professional Women's Club. Tickets remain at the Chamber office.
Bank of Italy marks 25 years with planned officer rotations. James A. Bacigalupi will step down at his five year term, recommending A. J. Mount as successor. A. Pedrini shifts to National Bankitaly and Bankitaly Company of America presidency, L. M. Giannini to chair boards.
M Katzman of Hayward Furniture company plans a new store at 828 B Street between Castro and B Streets next to Safeway, rebuilding after the Saturday blaze. He will honor deposits and past transactions from the former 641 Castro Street location. The note mentions a related crew tied to the Bird of Paradise.
Philadelphia Athletics defeated the Chicago Cubs 9 to 3 in the World Series second game. Jimmy Fox and Al Simmons homered for the A's while Connie Mack’s pitcher Ernshaw earned the win. Cubs starter Pat Mulloney exited after a strong start as Chicago managed all runs in the fifth.
Centerville Water company asked the state railroad commission for authority to sell its business to Public Utilities California and for $57,500 of common stock to pay for the properties. The commission dismissed the application without prejudice after finding the evidence did not justify issuing that stock and no lesser purchase price was shown.
About 40 outside district residents attended a Hayward Chamber of Commerce meeting to discuss annexation reports by Dolge & Co. and the Alameda County fair finances. Officials stressed any annexation must start in the target district and warned water supply issues could drive cooperation or the creation of a township utility district.
The fifth regional convention of the California Scholarship Federation bay section meets Saturday at Hayward High School with 28 bay region high schools represented. Vice Principal Frederick M. Foster will speak on Standards of Scholarship. Vieno Resti will call the meeting to order. The event in Room 20 includes a noon luncheon under Mrs. Lenore Ure. Principal F. P. Fohngon will speak, joined by attendees from Hayward and UC.
Native Sons of the Golden West Eden parlor will host a turkey banquet at 6 30 PM at the American Legion hall to honor longtime parlor secretaries Dr. Henry Powell and William T Knightly. Grand officers will attend with speakers including Charles Dodge John T Regan and Philip Carey.
Mrs. C. E. Godkin and Mrs. R. A. Merrer left Wednesday for Mare Island to visit Lieutenant Godkin who was taken to the navy hospital there Tuesday. He may stay about three months in the hospital after fracturing his left leg in a fall at Mount Eden.
The Hayward Christian church aims for 59 new members and reports eight new members for the day after Sunday services at Dania hall. Baptismal services are planned for Wednesday night October 16 at a location to be announced. Lester Oksen joins Company F of the Wyoming National Guard, strengthening the unit’s basketball roster for the regimental championship run this winter.
E W Burr chairs a luncheon at a local restaurant on October 18 for campaign supporters as the drive nears its $9700 goal. Donations have topped $7000 in four weeks with new gifts arriving at the Chest headquarters at 838 B Street. Civic groups push to reduce the remaining $3000 shortfall before next week ends.
J. F. Anthony is being sought by Hayward police after disappearing from his Sunset boulevard home Tuesday afternoon. The 52 year old man, 5 feet 3 inches tall and 123 pounds, wore a dark gray hat and coat with a striped shirt and trousers and black shoes. He left between 3 and 5 PM for the business district and did not return.
Expansion plans for the T. and D. gasoline service station at Grace and Castro streets are under way with a change in management. Pickersgill Brothers take over the station from Brue Skibough and plan numerous improvements. Compton Brothers, Lester and John, assume the repair department and pledge up to date service.
Election of officers will occupy the business hour at the American Legion Auxiliary. An active program for the group was completed recently. On the October calendar a card party is set for Tuesday evening October 22, with outgoing officers hosting the Thursday meeting.
A Dania Hall event promises a good time with Heiser's orchestra and an imposing array of prizes. Attendees can enjoy a dance and whist evening Saturday night with refreshments and general merriment assured.
