United Press reports American troops surged 2000 yards south of Metz to break the last natural ridge before the fortress as German reinforcements flooded in to delay its fall. Collie Small notes Yankee forces within a mile of Metz while Patton’s units seize more Metz outposts and tighten the encirclement.
A calm possum found near the post office is jailed in Tennessee. Two boys, Jai Mayyward Jamieson and Alan Whenley, turned the animal over to police after refusing to take it home. The creature silently awaits its owner while local officers plan next steps.
Western Front reports American forces capturing three forts and advancing through suburbs to within just over a mile of Metz while the British 2nd Army hurls Germans back on the last defense west of the Nazi frontier. In the Pacific, American carrier air power destroys 14 Japanese vessels and 158 to 168 planes around Manila as preparation for Luzon invasion. Eastern Front sees Ukrainian armored columns swing around Budapest as fighting intensifies near the capital. The action sank or set ablaze several vessels while Chester W. Nimitz’s fleet confirmed attacks and American ground forces moved toward Leyte, threatening Japanese forces in the northward corridor.
Brooklyn roiled as Noel Coward faced anger for describing wounded American servicemen as mournful little Brooklyn boys. In San Francisco a truck carrying pigs collided with a street car during peak traffic. A crowd aided by a dealer opened his garage to shelter animals owned by Kenneth Lovell. Of 34 pigs, 21 fled, 9 hid in a garage, one died. A local high school player later chased a pig for 15 blocks.
Detroit police say nurse Vhelma Little 35 admitted reviving a knockout drug operation linked to a visiting attorney’s intoxication but her St. Louis alibi suggests no involvement with the party where a redhead allegedly pressured the victim to drink. She is charged with grand larceny for allegedly dragging George Cannon 47 and taking his watch ring and $200, denying ties to the Fort Wayne case.
Bay Farms hires Arthur Robison as superintendent for its producing units. Robison brings about two decades of experience in animal husbandry and will oversee farm stock exports and related operations.
Urgent call for blood donors in the Hay area. Between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, donors are asked to register at the local blond donor center on Main Street Veterans Memorial Ride. District Attorney James M Thuysen announced that no charges would be filed against Mrs Gordon Miles who shot and killed 15 year old Richard Dearing in the back yard of her Fresno home Friday night. Thuysen said he was convinced Mrs Miles was justified under the circumstances. Mrs Miles is the wife of an overseas soldier.

Brothers Frederick in Germany with the American First Army and Earle in the Naval Air Corps in the South Pacific. Sisters Barbara in Anchorage Alaska and Kathryn Ferry wife of a nurse in San Jose.

Hollywood reports Gale Page. Her 24 year old son Jim Solite De Solis fell from a second Moor wine clan of his parents’ home while she broadcast a radio show. Alfred Michelas and Manuel Brandha faced court for possessing wild pheasants found by Oliver Inch in Mt L after reporting to the Fish and Game Commission. Brownlow testified birds were theirs before pheasant season opened. Convicted but fined a small amount.

In Los Angeles a jury found Roger Lewis Gardner guilty of grand theft for stealing $700 from former fiancée Miss Jeanette Walser. He received a one to 100 year state prison term with Superior Judge Harold B Landreth setting December 18 for murder trial readiness. Gardner has a complex prior history including a three year sentence for posing as a federal attorney. The murder charge related to Ora E Murray, killed in July 1943, remains under consideration by Deputy District Attorney John Barnes.

Hayward police recovered two abandoned vehicles on a recent day. A Buick with plate 583645 had been parked on B Street for three days, and a red Chevrolet plate unknown, front of 414 First Street since Friday night. The Chevrolet is registered to Edna Meyers, 881 Billings Blvd, Sah Pranviseo, but she has not reported it stolen.

Madrid sources claim Himmler seized key party power as Germany faces crisis and potential antiwar revolts are halted. Swiss dispatches warn of tense conditions across occupied Europe as Hitler’s grip appears to fade.
