Private 80 year old Camp Beale soldier executed by court martial after found guilty of killing Pvt. King J. Blonshaw in Isleton California on October 17. Stevenson and Ghinshaw were enlisted for cannery duty when the quarrel broke out during a gambling game.
UNITED States Army notes Patton’s forces storm Metz from south and west to within three and a half miles of its outskirts while two fords fall during a thrust. American actions threaten to cut reinforcement routes on Leyte. 2nd Ukrainian Army edges toward Budapest, probing Jaszborony with armor within 16 miles of the Hungarian capital. British forces press west of Bologna and Parki as they gain up to two miles against German resistance.
War correspondent Frans Prist Jr. was shot dead by a Japanese sniper while returning to MacArthur’s headquarters after photographing the 24th Division advancing on the Pinsmopam-Ormoc road in western Leyte. His jeep veered into a muddy ditch.

Packard Motor Car Co faced a walkout threat from a majority of its 6000 Negro employees over pay discrimination. Company spokesmen could not provide exact figures, but estimates suggested all Negroes in the plant might strike, though a total plant shutdown was not expected. Production had halted for three days previously after 300 red polishers protested upgrading of Black workers.
Nine year old David Bourbonnais confessed that his tale of being locked in a trailer trunk for a week was a hoax. He said he ran away from home and wandered before crawling into the trunk as rain fell Saturday night. neighbors and police, who had supported his story, learned the truth when he broke down and spoke.
John Pugh of Pan American Airways spoke to the Rotary Club at its Monday luncheon on air transportation. Judge Jacob Marder de was named committee chair to plan a Rotary party at the UBC on Thanksgiving Eve.
An 11 year old, Arthur Lopey, suffered possible fracture injuries after his bicycle collided with a car on Eust Street three miles east of Toyward. Rudolph E. Jesse, the driver, reported he could not avoid the impact as Arthur rode into his path while crossing. Arthur was taken to Fairmont Hospital for treatment.
The Hayward Youth Council will represent at a California State Youth Authority conference in Sacramento Saturday and Sunday. Chosen members include Phyllis Andrade, Key Quist, Joan Waldkocter, Shirley Marcie, Marl Jansen, Ronald Gaggia, Courtney Borrecca, and Jeanine Broadwell. The group will be hosted by area families and attend sessions at Westminster Church and the State Capitol with Governor Earl Warren addressing. A banquet at Grant Union High School and various youth activities are planned.
Mr and Mrs Filbert Gietten of Irvington were treated for minor injuries by a local doctor after their car was struck and spun by another vehicle at Firsh and IT Sts Monday night around 10 o clock. Romeo Cogetti of San Leandro, driver of the striking car, told police he did not see Bettencourt's car until too close to avoid impact. The Bettencourts’ left side was badly damaged.
Joe Tubbs of Delanowan was arrested by deputies on drunkenness charges after being found lying face down along a road in Vow Canyon. He was taken to Airmont Hospital for treatment of bruises on his face and hands.
Jubilation over passage of area recreation propositions marked the Hayward area Community Council meeting. A committee including C. B. Paulsen Mrs John V Waves Wesley Gordon Matthew O Sulli van and Mrs J S Haines was named to confer with county supervisors on coordinating district funds for 1948. Paulsen urged continued pursuit of federal Lanham Act funds to title the area wide program during the interim period.
Roosevelt to be inaugurated for a fourth term on January 20 at the White House south portico due to material shortages and cost savings. Senate and House committee chair Byrd says attendance will be limited to ease transport and hotel congestion. Truman also to be inaugurated as vice president at the White House.
Minor injuries were sustained by Eileen G Faulkner and Harold T Faulkner of 2425 Demuth Ave Oakland after a truck and a car collided on the Irvington Warm Springs Road Monday afternoon. Driver Walt Lee Linga told highway patrol he swerved to avoid the Faulkner vehicle when it crossed into his lane and both vehicles then collided.
Andree, a 14 year old San Leandro youth, pleads not guilty in Oakland to charges of murdering Shirley Pratt, 10, by striking her with a water pipe while she cared for three children. Judge Victor Wagler set January 8 for trial and ordered psychiatric examination.
Superior Judge Victor Wagler of Oakland postponed ruling on the probation plea of Nels Nelson Hayward contractor who pleaded guilty to offering a bribe to A L Vollmann. Vollmann, convicted last week of taking a $5000 bribe, remains jailed without bail as Judge Tyrell sets a Friday hearing on a possible new trial motion.
Treasury director Ted Tt. Garoble reported total war bonds outstanding on Nov 1 at $34.007 billion with $38.299 billion in sales since May. The 11.2 percent redemption rate and 85,000,000 individuals holding bonds show a shift to hold for maturity. The Sixty Sixth War Loan Drive will seek an additional $5 billion toward a $14 billion goal, $2 billion below the fifth drive.

The Chrysler Motors Corporation of Detroit purchased 40 acres of San Leandro industrial land in Metropolitan Oakland for about $60,000. The Oakland Chamber of Commerce confirmed the sale, stating the property will be used by Chrysler or National Automotive Fibres Inc, or both, and was the largest industrial sale in the area this year.
Ocean View residents in San Francisco appeal to Washington to reopen their district bakery closed by the National Uiew of Brice Administration. The shop, owned by 88 year old William Kellerer for 88 years, ceased operation after a dispute over price and OPA sugar and baking supply limits. Kellerer says no release to reopen was granted as the OPA now classifies it as a new business. The bakery serves about 5000 residents in the district.
Four witnesses testified in a diavynile Court hearing on whether Olga Hoy of 963 A St can care for her 11 year old adopted son. The case was continued to Nov 30. Olga Hoy’s daughter and neighbors Dorothy Cowzill Clara Sanborne and Clara Johnson spoke. Neither child nor foster mother testified. A probation report by Miss Eleanor McIntee was submitted to Judge Ezra Decoto who will rule after further witnesses.
Police blame pranksters for draining a 250000 gallon water tank that fed fire hydrants in two suburban communities near Kansas City. The incident deprived water supply and fire protection for several days.
